Forgive me for asking this silly question, but can you plug your BB into your laptop (to tether) without having your BB charge and drain your laptop battery?

Believe me, I've googled this, but it seems like I'm the only one??

when plugged in, its automatic to charge.

If it really matters, I think you can find out which one of the pins is power and cut that wire. But Bluetooth is another option. The adapter would use some power, but probably less than phone does.

It can be done...but it's a messy solution. With Rim's DM and USB drivers installed, charging begins as soon as the device is connected. The solutions include killing the driver process in Task Manager or disabling your USB ports in Device Manager. Either is not particularly difficult to do and you should be able to restart either without a reboot...but as I said, it's a messy and tedious solution...and might possible affect system stability.

Oops...I just read your post again...missed the need to tether. Never mind...as Gilda would say.

as you need the drivers to recognise the BB for tethering.

Once it's charged it wont draw anything. But if your laptop is not plugged in both will need power at some point. You cannot expect either to work very long with out external power.
