I am moving to Scotland from Ireland tomorrow and im trying to decide on the best method of keeping contact with people from home. I have a couple of questions im hoping somebody may be able to enlighten me on?
Is it possible to phone someone using a Skype Application on a Blackberry phone to the Skype on there laptop and if possible which phone would be required to do this?
Any help will be much appreciated

It's just another piece of software, so is that because Verizon are the only ones that have written some or is it because of licensing/legal restraints?

If the later that will prove to be quite a monopoly

With 'all you can eat' mobile data contracts around I forecast that by this time next year, any mobile that doesn't support skype will be in the dustbin

"all you can eat" data contracts are slowly going away.

Your forecast is taken with a grain of salt.

A HUGE grain of salt.

AT&T recently changed their contracts (particularly for data gulping iPads).

Nimbuzz supports Skype on Curve 8900 and also worked on my old Pearl 8100. Only chat/IM, though.

You might also check out iSkoot for Skype. Have not used it in a long time. So not sure if that still available.

Verizon really locks things down. You can't even use the limited functionality outside of the US at all. I just bought the 9650 from Verizon and I am speaking from experience.

You can NOT make any use of wifi and Skype - it uses the Verizon network. You can use it to call Skype users at their PCs and also you can use your Skype credit to call overseas folks from the US. That is all.

Go to the Skype site and check out the mobile options. You would be better off with an iPhone I think. Each phone has its limitations but the iPhone looked the best.

Right. But this isn't a secret.

This is widely disclosed on both the Verizon and the Skype websites.

Yes, which is why I wanted to point it out to the fellow thinking of doing the BB with Skype in Scotland.

Anyone know if there is a way to get the Skype IMs to show up in the message or SMS areas?

Going into the app is a bit of a pain.

Thanks,
R

Nope. The Skype app does not interface with the Messages application currently.

I like Skype. It costs us much less when telecommunicating. But my BB 9700 can not use Skype. It's a pity. I have tried to install SKOOT, but it seems that I have to pay for the international telephone costs. So I don't use it. Is there a better way for me to use skype for calling and pay less money?
