Default [International Travel] Wi-Fi with Data Services off possible?

Please Login to Remove!

Hello,

I am travelling to Asia and do not want a huge data service bill when I get home. Is it possible to turn off the data service only and leave Wi-Fi available for surfing at hotspots, etc? When I turn off my data service, the Wi-Fi also shuts down. How can I use Wi-Fi without also having data services running?

At Options > Advanced > Browser, set the browser to HotSpot.

Now, turn off the Data services and your browser will still be usable via WiFi.

I have At&T. I did exactly this, and as soon as I turned off data services, the Wi-Fi cut out also. This is despite setting the browser to hotspot. I was testing this on my router at home. It can find the router just fine, and it shows connected, but browsing is disabled.

So you open the browser, try going to a site like this one, wap.blackberryforums.com

What happens?

In settings turn off data when roaming. Than in network preference select wi-fi prefered.
Every time you are in wi-fib area you should be able to acess the RIM infrastructure. Tested and it works on Vodafone when roaming in the UK, Greece and Turkey

Wi-fi preferred is only a setting on UMA phones (8900 etc) it does not exist on the Bold.

Apparently the trick is to keep Data Services ON, activate wi-fi, wait for icon to go white.
Then uncheck Mobile Network.
Then use hotspot browser to surf the net.

This worked, I was able to browse the internet. However, this turned off my phone service, which I would still like to be able to use.

1) The wi-fi icon goes off as soon as I shut down data service.

2) I get a message that says, "Cannot connect to the internet, try again later."

The trick mentioned above is the only way to get it to work.
Its phone and no internet or internet and no phone.
Sorry.
