I'm pretty sure it will use the Wi-Fi connection. I often turn off the Mobile Network when I'm at my desk because the GSM radio will mute my speakerphone and make that horrible noise all the time! I also have a Wi-Fi connection at work, and I'm pretty sure I get all of my email - both BES and BIS - when I have the Wi-Fi turned on and the Mobile Network turned off.

Go to Manage Connections and uncheck Mobile Network and see what happens.

Oh yea, I'm PRETTY SURE - NOT POSITIVE that email does not count as Data, but again you'd have to check that out.

If you have wi-fi on, and use the browser, it uses wi-fi.
most if not all applications (facebook, msn etc) use data connection.
If you do the above and turn off the mobile network and use wi-fi you will get emails.
if you use only the data and not wi-fi, emails do count as data, because it has to use the data connection to download them.

I just tested it and sent an email from my BES (using OWA) account to my Yahoo and AT&T BlackBerry accounts. With only Wi-Fi enabled, I received the sent message (BES) as well as the Yahoo and AT&T messages (BIS), and was able to reply to all from both messages.

Also, Facebook, and probably all the other RIM IM clients, work with only WiFi. In fact, it looks like even Viigo, which is not set up to use Wi-Fi, works fine with Mobile Network disabled. I can't verify it absolutely, but with neither Mobile Network or Wi-Fi enabled it hangs for an increadably long time when requesting an update, but seems to behave fine with only Wi-Fi enabled.

Your mileage may vary - just try it! Just try whatever app you want with only Wi-Fi. Worst case, you'll have to do a battery pull!

I'm guessing a "well behaved" application's network requests will automatically be rerouted through Wi-Fi if it's available, and especially if there's no Mobile Network connection. Note that the WAP browser does NOT work (which figures), and Browser Bookmarks that are set to use the "Internet Browser" work also and are probably automatically rerouted to the "Hotspot Browser".

This is weird. I turned off data service under mobile network. The wifi icon dimmed and lost my internet connection.

Unless you stream a lot of media, I think you'll have a hatd time using 1GB a month.
