You could probably use Opera Mini with the proper apn settings entered but you may very well be charged for it on per kb basis.

Go to Options >Advanced Options TCP settings.

Then enter:

apn:wap.voicestream.com
username
password

leave username and password blank.

At a certain point near the end it states
"The application operette $2dhifi$2dus has attempted to open a connection to a location inside the firewall and outside, the firewall which is not allowed by your IT policy"

Do you have an IT Policy on the device? Look in Options >Security Options >General Settings. Scroll down to the bottom and see if there is any reference to IT policy. It's 'possible' that an IT policy will not show but there can still be an it policy. I would update your 8700 to 4.5 and follow the instructions in Method 1 in the post below:

Nope, I don't see anything about IT, and despite making the other topic about downgrading, I do have 4.5 so I will look at the link and come back with results.

What is JL_Cmder's "resettofactory"? And where can I find it?

It's included in JL_Cmder. You can download JL_Cmder from my signature.

It should. It sounds like it could have an old version of a blank IT policy on it that restricts "split pipe connections." The 'resettofactory" may very well fix it.

On Desktop Manager I choose

BackUp and Restore--> Back Up, and that backs up everything? I am using the latest version of Desktop Manager, and when I want to restore I choose restore right?

Also do you know how many text messages the 8700c can support before I have to delete some?

Do the backup as you describe.

Then do the resettofactory.

Do the restore, if necessary.

It can hold a lot. I doubt you'll fill it up.

OMG! MMS is NOT a Data Plan. If you don't have a data plan, you probably can't connect to the Internet - no matter WHAT your APN settings, OR Split Pipes, or whatever!

And BTW - if you DO somehow connect to the Internet WITHOUT a Data Plan, be prepared to pay some hefty fees for per/KB data. The Phone companies just LOVE to do that!

Jerry - calm down! Who said MMS is a data plan?
The original poster is trying to figure out if Opera will work. They made a statement that MMS works.

If they can get to load Opera and get the message they did, it is generally a firewall problem. Which can be caused by an IT Policy.

John - do you have a policy.bin that clears the firewall setting? The policy.bin on the page you referenced actually APPLIES the policy to enable the firewall.

Jerry, there is no blank policy that will clear the firewall. The policy.bin in my thread DOES remove the "split pipe connection" problem the OP is having. My first IT Policy I wrote didn't remove it and I updated it a year or two ago to remove the split pipe issues, but it always locks the firewall.

However, if you read the rest of the thread I referenced, with OS 4.3 and higher on the device you can use the "resettofactory" command in JL_Cmder to completely remove any IT policy on the device. However, the blank IT policy is still the only IT policy removal method for devices with OS 4.2 and older.
