Default NO email allowed (BES)

Please Login to Remove!

OK... very odd question so please don't shout as this is what our admin want.

We have a BES server and around 50 devices. Admin want to charge staff for the priviledge of getting email on their phone, but also want to be able to control the device and lock it if lost.

So the dilemma. How do I create block email for some staff and not others. I figured that I would need a policy for data blocking, but what settings would I apply to the policy.

Hope you can help...

Thanks

Wow, I don’t even know how to react to that. Maybe I am naïve. I think it would be time to look for another company to work for.

That said… I think it is simple. If a user does not pay for “the privilege”, then your admin does not have to activate the device on the BES. No activation, no email. Simple. No need for a policy.

If the device is owned by the user and not on the BES, the admin should not have the "right" to control the device and/or be able to lock it. Simple.

The phones are compnay owned. They charge you $15 if you want data/email. If not then it's just a phone. But they still own the phone and want the ability to lock the
device etc.

It's actually not a bad deal, for those who chose to take it, for $15 people get a phone that they can use for personal use as well with unlmited text etc. Just that there are some peope who do not want a phone like that and only use it as a phone for work purposes, hence the need to lock out the data plan for those people.

Still asking if there is anyway to policy lock out the data and still control the phone.

Thanks

Okay, I took your wording and description in another manner.

Have you looked into plans with your carrier? If your user pays for the service and wishes to have their email, you put them on BES. If not, you can still have the BB as a phone and not have to put them on BES.

You are assuming that everyone with a BB has to be on a BES plan. That is not the case.

Problem here is that the BES Admin seems to want the ability to control the BB handsets (remote lock and wipe) but block email/calendar/data sync.

GPITMAN, there is some futility here. In order to do this, your company would have to pay for the BES data plan for all BB handsets, whether the users want data or not.

Then create an IT policy tied to a group, called NoData or something.
You didn't state your BES version, but on 5 you'd change IT Policy settings such as:

Email Messaging > Enable Wireless Message Reconciliation > False
PIM Synchronization > Disable All Wireless Synchronization > True
Service Exclusivity > Allow Other Message Services > False (to stop BIS useage)
Browser > Disable all browsers to stop web browsing usage outside of BES
BlackBerry Messenger > Disable BlackBerry Messenger > True
Global > Allow Browser > False
Global > Allow Phone > True
Device Only > Allow Peer-to-Peer Messages > False

and so on. There are quite a few settings you'd have to play with, I don't have a definitive list.

The end result is phone functionality will work, no data functionality will.
So the BES Admin will have the ability to wipe the BB remotely... But it will only have call logs on it... So not sure it's REALLY worth the effort. But it is possible.

Agreed - this is not a well thought out approach.
