Default software blamed for deleted emails

Please Login to Remove!

Hi guys, I haven't seen anything like this posted here yet, but maybe someone might have some ideas. A beta-tester of my program has reported (indirectly, not to me) that his emails were disappearing, and, suspecting my program, removed it. He told my customer that now his emails remain, so he is reluctant to reinstall the program.

I can't get any more details at this point, but reportedly this person's techie complained to RIM about the problem and they feigned ignorance (no surprise there).

Even if my program is something of a memory hog, it does nothing to interact with emails, and the operating system silently deleting emails to free up RAM is not a nice thing to do...

Anyway, any clues?

BB knows which API's your program uses if you are using singed code. The only way to mess with the mail is with signed code so there is no need to worry if your APP isn't signed.

If you didn't use the mail api and you did something to erase an email its BB's fault.

I am using signed code, but not the mail API. Agreed, it's BB's fault (or perhaps something unrelated that the customer did) but I still have to solve it :^(

There's a BB feature to automatically delete older emails.

If you upgraded to BlackBerryOS 4, it uses more memory, and is more likely to automatically delete old messages when running low in memory. Please look at your BlackBerry Desktop configuration, your BlackBerry configuration (Messages List -> Options), and if you are using BES ("Keep Messages" option), your BES configuration as well. Also monitor Option->Status for amount of free memory.

If you are using BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4, check this:

Well, as a support admin with MailStreet, and the lead blackberry technician, I have been fighting this issue for about a month. Finally, one knowledgable technician at RIM requested a copy of our application log. He immediately pointed me to a microsoft knowledgebase article detailing a memory leak of some sort.

Oddly, our settings already reflected the registry hacks detailed in the MS kb. So, I was back on with RIM again. This time, the tech had me compare versions of DLLs and he determined that we needed to apply Exchange SP1 to our BES servers. We did this, rebooted, and the issue went away. Whether it was the SP or the reboot that fixed it, we don't know, but we're watching and listening carefully.
