To be fair: Taking your BlackBerry anywhere else other than the country of origin - and then replacing the SIM with a local one - will disable your email, etc.
If you're concerned about data usage: Just go into Options/Settings, Mobile Network, and "Data Services" "While Roaming" to off.
That'll cut down your data and you'll only be left with voice and SMS which will probably get you where you need to be. The cool thing is that if you find a Starbucks or other WiFi hotspot you can go and get email / updates / Google Maps there.
I travel a lot - and carry a "local" phone with me and keep my Torch for my remote use so that other people can contact me easily but I'll make local calls using a pre-paid SIM.
In Canada you can get SIM's from Rogers, and also Bell and Telus, now. In fact all the Canadian carriers offer SIMs
