Hello,

I have an unlocked torch which has been set-up for use on T-Mobile. I am traveling to Canada in about a week and plan to pick up a Rogers pre-paid SIM for the trip. Do I have to make any adjustment to my phone in order to have it work on Rogers or will putting in the new SIM be enough to send the Rogers service books to my phone?

Pre-paid SIM cards on Rogers do not offer BlackBerry Data service.
You won't get any service books. You'll have voice and SMS only.

To be fair: Taking your BlackBerry anywhere else other than the country of origin - and then replacing the SIM with a local one - will disable your email, etc.

If you're concerned about data usage: Just go into Options/Settings, Mobile Network, and "Data Services" "While Roaming" to off.

That'll cut down your data and you'll only be left with voice and SMS which will probably get you where you need to be. The cool thing is that if you find a Starbucks or other WiFi hotspot you can go and get email / updates / Google Maps there.

I travel a lot - and carry a "local" phone with me and keep my Torch for my remote use so that other people can contact me easily but I'll make local calls using a pre-paid SIM.

In Canada you can get SIM's from Rogers, and also Bell and Telus, now. In fact all the Canadian carriers offer SIMs

Not true. There are carriers that offer BlackBerry Data services on a pre-paid SIM.
Rogers isn't one of them.

I agree. I'm always travelling, and the best way to contain data cost is to turn off data services while roaming, and try to do all the email and BBM at the hotels or office or other Wi-fi enabled locations.

I'm having a few issues with Wi-Fi and Google maps while traveling in Bogota, my Torch (from ATT) keeps saying that a Data Connection is required, even though I'm connected to a Wi-Fi network.

Exact message is as follows;
"This application requires a data connection, and some Blackberry devices require reconfiguration to work properly. Please visit google.com/gmm on your computer for more info."

However when I looked, the only thing the page seems to be good for is downloading the Google maps.

Am I missing some service books or something? This is my first Blackberry and I'm sorry if this seems like a silly question.

Do you have an active BlackBerry Data Plan?
