Man Google Maps is pretty cool. I have 4200 meters though in our data center. This will still keep me from having to purchase VZ Navigator.

FYI, I found that to get it working on some devices you have to go to options -> advanced -> applications and set the permissions to allow as opposed to the default custom setting.

Just got a 8900 yesterday. Downloaded 3.0.2 and have all the permissions set to allow and the GPS turned on.

It's showing my location as in Southern California when I'm in NY. It's saying waiting for satelite, so given I'm indoors I turned the GPS off and thought that the cell tower triangulation would take over and update my location but it's not.

Any ideas?

Question anomalies

I've had some strange results. I just did the install and checked Google maps and it was bouncing around quite a bit. Showed me within a 3.1k meter area of where I actually am (Michigan that is) which was pretty close I guess. Checked BB maps and I was traveling 251 miles per hour somewhere in the area of Atlanta, Georgia. Not so close. Only 4 satellites though. I'll try a reset to see if it has any effect. Anyone else had this kind of quirk?

It takes a while to locate GPS - but I'm in a building...

It takes longer than Blackberry Maps does...

I would never compare GMM w/ VZNav... They aren't competitors. GMM can do directions, but it's not made explicitly for that function (maybe future versions will be).

I usually don't drive anywhere I need directions anyways...

I get 3.0.2 to do GPS - within 100M inside my workplace.

I think Google is still trying to use A-GPS first, then when it times out (because Verizon isn't providing A-GPS to anyone outside of themselves), they go to S-GPS.

Probably why it takes longer to get connection.

I could see Latitude as being very cool if you're on a trip as it would allow people at your destination to see where you are - especially if they need to give you directions!

Make sure you have Compatiblity Mode disabled.

Go to Options/Advanced Options/Applications.
Scroll down and touch (not click) Google Maps.
Press Menu and choose Disable Compatibility Mode.

If the choice is not there, and there is a choice for "Enable Compatibility Mode", then, well, that's not your problem, and I have no more advice for you.

I think this is what's happening...my work around is to run my signal location app before or just after opening gm...finds my location right away

Make sure you have location based services turned on. I didn't and had the same problem (duh).

I believe GPS only works on Google maps 3.0.2....with the Storm.

Yay! This makes me so happy. BBMaps is garbage compared to Google Maps, but I kept it installed because it worked with GPS. Also, for me personally, turn-by-turn directions are not worth paying for.

GMM FTW! :D

Haha, I got the GPS to work within 5 meters, totally awesome! I would have to agree with an earlier post; VZNav and Google Maps serve two different purposes and don't compare to each other very easily.

By the way, the way I heard it was the GPS issue was on the Google side and the coding needed to be updated to accommodate VZW GPS. In fact I think I read that on another thread on this forum.

I just installed the new version 3.0.2. over the old version of Google maps I had. Before installing 3.0.2. you will be prompted to replace or write over the existing version. I believe this is the way to go because all my map favorites are still saved! Saved me extra some time...

Used mine for the first time this evening and I've been getting 3 meters of accuracy pretty consistently! This is such a big improvement over the "Triangulation" method of the older Google Maps I was using.

Very cool app!

Slightly off topic, but my GPS seems to have stopped working altogether. Yesterday I was getting 3-5 meters in my home, today GPS is dead everywhere for all apps, i.e. Google maps is triangulating and WeatherBug can't find my location. I went to options/advanced/GPS and my location IS on. What gives?
