Guys,

i'm planning to be in Europe for a couple of weeks. I got my BB 9000 (rogers) unlocked.

What i plan to do is buy prepaid SIM cards over there. perhaps in London as its my first stop.

This should eliminate my roaming, etc.

What about my Blackberry Data (BIS)? Will that follow my rogers SIM? I understand I can turn my wifi on and it should pull down my emails, etc but would I be able to get a prepaid SIM that covers blackberry data?

Wirelessly posted

Yes, when you land to Heathrow pickup an Orange Sim pack from one of the boxes in arrivals hall . They already have prepaid credit included. Call the carrier to activate and ask for BIS to be added. BIS is £5 a month but doesn't cover wap/2/tcp/BES access.

Where's the part about switching your BB from Rogers to the new carrier? Doesn't that need to be done to receive any data on the new prepaid SIM?

I would think the data follows your PIN - or the handset? i'm not sure :S

my phone is now unlocked so the prepaid SIM should take care of the voice, just not sure about BIS. anyone else???

Data follows the PIN AND THE SIM. The carrier's BIS must associate the SIM and PIN/IMEI. You have to remove the account from Rogers BIS and add it to new carrier BIS. Otherwise, no data.

Would that involve me cancelling my data with Roges? I hope not. perhaps i'm just better off having my wireless on to pull down emails.

correct, you would need to have rogers delete the BIS account, which they may not do.

Sorry to confuse you ash, let's clear things up a bit.

Your Rogers BIS would indeed follow you abroad. Roaming charges and all.
For prepaid BIS see my other post. You don't have to use your Rogers sim to activate the new carrier. The prepaid SIMs come with credit and on top of that the activation/registration line is free (from the handset, not the hotel's phone)

Your PHONE needs to be disassociated in order to have BIS from another carrier. If you just want internet access or to get webmail a sim with an internet plan from another carrier WILL WORK in a BIS associated blackberry.NO BIS though. If BIS is what you absolutely need you'll have to call Rogers and free the PIN.

How many countries are you visiting? For how long? If it's a short time and you dont want to cancel your Rogers plan just pick up a used berry (or a couple of them) from a shop or ebay (79xx and 8700 perform well and cost peanuts). Make sure they have free PINs and you can have prepaid SIM plans on them (You can actually only use one but you'll have to deregister/register as you move along with your itinerary)

Have you asked Rogers for an International data roaming pack? That would probably be the solution with the least drama involved.
