I used to have a treo and it had a feature where you can turn on security and anything you marked private would not be seen until you put the password back in. does BB have anything similar to this?

Welcome to the forums.
Go to Options > Security Options > General Settings > Password = Enabled.
That will set a password on your device.
Make sure to make frequent backups. If you enter the password incorrectly 10 times all the data will be lost.

Please can we attempt to keep this on-topic?
Much as I love to hear all your stories about the incriminating stuff on devices, save it for OTL

Using a password is just plain smart, and for reasons other than hiding incriminating evidence.
First, it keeps anyone random from picking up your 'berry and using it. Phone calls, texts, email, whatever. "Oh, I just send a joke email to your friend using your BB. It'll be hilarious!" When a drunk friend says this, it will probably not be hilarious.
Second, I've heard multiple accounts of someone playing around with a friend's BB and "accidentally" setting a password. The one who set it has no idea what he did or what the password is. Device locked, data gone. The majority of these cases are probably somebody asking how to break into someone else's BB, but I know of at least one, first hand, that is true. Daughter, 10, was playing with dad's BB, which was left lying on the kitchen counter. Next thing you know it's locked. TGFB! (Thank Goodness For Backups).
There are also those individuals, loosely classified as "friends", who think it's funny to lock someone out of his own device. By setting a password, even if you don't enable it, you keep somebody from doing this to you. Hopefully, eventually they get around to telling you the password, invariably something like "butthead", but it's just easier to avoid the situation from the start. Use the password feature!

How about growing a set and tell her to deal with it...

When asked, "Why do you lock your phone?", just answer "Security." That should be the end of the discussion. If pressed (which you shouldn't be) then say "You should have your phone locked too. It's just smart. Don't you lock yours?"

I don't see how this is constructive or adding anything to this thread. The OP came here looking for some assistance, not for us to pass judgment on him.

Totally agree. The topic is device security, not relationship councelling. If the thread goes any further off the chain, it will be closed.

I know you can hide a folder and/or individual pictures and when they are hidden they are not "seeable" in the camera application, or in the Media application. However you CAN "show hidden" in the media application through the menu. So if she's saavy about BBs and how they work, and you did hide pictures, she might know how to find them.
I suspect this isn't exactly what you are after. I suspect private appointments, etc. are what you were hoping to hide. I don't think it can be done on a BB, but it would be fabulous if it could. There ARE good reasons for wanting that type/level of security.
good luck.
