Hello all,

When you mark a contact, or a task, or an item in calendar as "private," how do I actually hide that item from viewing? And once it is "hidden" from view, how do you view it later on?

How are you marking as private? I understand categories, but I don't think that is what you are talking about, and I don't see anything else.

I am not marking as private in "category." However, let's make it simple. How does one go about 'hiding' certain contacts(persons), 'hiding' certain tasks or events in the calendar so that nobody else can see other than myself? In other words, how does one go about keeping certain items hidden or secret?

Enable the password on your device and you don't have to worry about 'hiding' anything....

Or if it's that necessary to hide something, put it in the password keeper app.

Juwaack68: It seems you are not reading my question. Password enabling is only as good as if one were to power off or if one were to lock the device. What I want is to hide certain information whether or not the device is on or off with password protection.

True, it would only be good if you were to lock the device.

So your answer is no, you can't 'hide' information on your device. If you want it be secure, then lock it so nobody else can access the data.

I think this stems from the fact that with a Palm HH you can hide contacts so that if you want to view hidden contacts you're required to enter a password. I know that I used to do that when I had a Treo.

I don't know of any way you can do that on the BB.

You can mark entries as private, but they're not hidden. It would be nice to be able to hide contacts and calendar events. Get on that RIM!

I've seen the questions on the board recently about hiding calendar entries, too. What's the point of doing this on the handheld? (Just asking.) I understand doing it on a calendar you share, and you have "public" which everyone sees and then "private" or "personal" entries that you alone can see. Might be nice if BB supported that when syncing with a shared calendar.

But if the issue is simply just making entries on the BB hidden, what's the advantage of that vice locking the device? (I know one answer is going to be you wouldn't have to lock everything in order to lock just one or several things, but locking seems such a small thing to me I don't see the extra inconvenience that maybe others do.)

I can't speak for others, but I would like to be able to make memo entries private. I've got a memo where I store account numbers and pins I use, and I'd like to have a way to keep it from being accessed. Who knows if sometime I may lay my BB down unlocked, this would give me a back-up security.

I would NEVER keep confidential information (account numbers/pin) in a memo. That's what Password Keeper is for!

I agree with NJ....don't store those in memo pad. Password keeper is free and works quite well or there are 3rd party soloutions such as Ascendo DataVault that will store and encrypt that kind of data.

Password keeper is great! It's usable for a lot more than just website passwords too. You can store anything you want kept secure like bank account info, social security numbers, credit card stuff, etc.

Eeek! And all all those account numbers go into an Outlook Note when you sync? Protecting Outlook witha passwork is very easy to crack (free apps on the Web)...

The "private" option on Calendar entries is only for syncing up to the Outlook calendar. When opening another user's calendar in an Exchange server environment will not show private entries to other users.

As far as keeping secrets hidden, then do not use MemoPad, use Password Keeper. If you must have synchronization then you'll need to find a third party program like wibbly and others have said, CryptMagic is one possibility.

Ah, the light bulb illuminates. I'm coming from the Palm world, I didn't know what the Password Keeper was for, I thought it had something to do with setting a password for the BB itself. Still coming up to speed, obviously.

As for the poster that asked about syncing w/Outlook, and exposing the confidential data, I don't use Outlook, although all my effots to find a desktop application that I can use have met with zero success. But I sure hate to load Outlook just to have a desktop application for my Curve.

Desktop manager will sync with other apps as well....not limited to Outlook.
