When I install 4.1.6 is it ok to connect to the database on our SQL server without it being patched with MR5?
Second
Once the second BES is up i want to migrate all users to it and de-activate the live BES, then tranfser the SRP to the new BES? Is this doable or can i see problems arising?
On the MR question, the MR release notes always say that all instances much be on the same MR, IIRC. So I would make sure every BES connecting to the same DB is at exactly the same version.

I believe he meant that he has no built in MR5 installation file but the one without. Which is ok but as Stu said you should add MR5 after initial install.
For cutover you can not change bb server name but just windows server name (netbios one).
If you don't have too many users you may be better off to do clean install and pick the name you want.
thanks guys. i added the new bes (had an extra srp) with new name and all is well now. i've started the migration process which seems to be going smoothly.
Is your BES for Exchange? I have BES for Domino 4.1.6 MR5 (10 servers). RIM recently posted a critical advisory that when moving users the new service books fail to push to the handheld. I've seen this firsthand and are about to install MR6 (Hotfix) which addresses the problem. In MR5, The workaround (for us) is to reactivate the user -- RIM recommends resending service books but that did not resolve it for us.
