Question Is it possible to...

Please Login to Remove!

I am not a BES admin, so forgive me if this is a dumb question.

I know it is possible to backup the data from each BlackBerry to the BES server. Is it possible to exclude certain things from the backup? For example, the phone call log. I have noticed that when having to reactivate existing users it takes a lot longer than new users. I had one individual that took over 4 hours to complete activation because he had over 5500 entries in his phone call log.

As far as I know, that info is all saved in the SQL database and you can't exclude it. If you know ahead of time you need to reactivate a BB for some reason or another, delete its phone log ahead of time before you wipe it and reactivate it. As long as you reconile once before wiping it, it should clear out that log in the database.
Hope this helps.

That is what I was afraid of. I will have to try deleting, reconcile, wiping, reactivating. I tried it without reconciling, and they all came back. Maybe I need to suggest it as a new feature enhancement.

One more dumb question... Will being on the EDGE network make activation go faster as well?

I don't think so. I do know that if you physically connect the BB to a PC running the mgmt software, it will activate via USB instead of over-the-air, which is usually faster. All sorts of things make activation sometimes long, and I never found a rhyme or reason for it. You take a normal mailbox, with minimal messages, calendar entries, tasks, etc... (like mine) and it will activate in about 10-15 mins or less. I've seen some people's take upwards to 1+ hours, depending on how many tasks, calendar entries, address book entries, etc... they have. Since you can't tell a VP to clear out their address book of old junk before activating their BB, you have to alot over an hour for it. I usually tell folks it takes 1-2 hours to reactivate their BB. That way, if it takes only 20 minutes, you get it to them quick and they're happy. If it goes really long, then that's just the way it is.

The synchronization portion of an Enterprise Activation is a "slow sync". It is designed to be slow to ensure that the BES has available resources for other users.

Hi all,
I'm experiencing just this problem with a re-activation - over 6000 entries in the Phone Call Log. Why the heck do they all stay in there?

For the future - how can i clear the contents of the Phone Call Log folder on the device?

thanks
El.

+P will open the Phone Call Log folder. Highlight a line with the date, press scroll wheel, select Delete Prior.

That command will not work for me. I did set a speed dial key to the letter P...is that the problem?

I am grateful for the tip and was making sure it would work, that way when I run into this problem in the future I will be able to resolve it.

You have to hit the ALT+P from within the messages menu.
