Question Voice signal VS Data signal

Please Login to Remove!

Is it true that even though you may have strong signal strength that you may not have data signal? From what I understand, voice coincides with data but it is not always the case because they are two different entities of each other. If this is the case, how can you tell what type of data signal you have?

If your Blackberry reads EDGE or GPRS you should be fine. Lowercase gprs, edge, gsm, or GSM indicates that there's some issue with data. As far as I know, you can't get a separate signal strength for GPRS or EDGE.

For Nextel devices, you would look at whether the NXTL next to the signal bars are capital or lower case. If they are capitalized that means all services are available, if any or all are lower case, then there are some services that are unavailable. There is a chart in the Quick reference guide that comes with the device that shows you what the signal indicators mean.

Check the support documents section of blackberry.com, and download the getting started guide for the 7130e. There is a section on wireless network coverage and what exactly can be done in each mode.

It is possible to have differences in data and voice coverage.

EVDO, for example, is data-only. Verizon may deploy EVDO at 1900MHz, and voice at 800MHz...which would certainly create a noticeable coverage variance to the user.

It is also technically possible for the carrier to deploy dedicated voice or data channels on 1X...

I can have voice with a DATA CONNECTION REFUSED banner on my Verizon 7250 when I'm in my local area. When I travel to Yosemite I have roaming voice and NO data.
