The "Wi-Fi hotspon login" step is only required for hotspots that require some sort of authentication semantics in addition to, or instead of WEP, WPA, etc. For example, I've never had to do that step for my home or office, but I have for some airports and hotels.

I had similar issues with my 8350i ... the device would connect to my wireless router, but the Wi-Fi Diagnostics would show that it couldn't get connected to the 'Blackberry Infrastructure'.

In my case, the problem turned out to be my NETGEAR wireless AP/router (a RangeMax WPN82). I had to set the "NAT Filtering" option from the default 'Secure' setting, to 'Open'. As soon as I did that, my 8350i succesfully connected to the "Blackberry Infrastructure", my WiFi icon turned solid black/white, and my web browsing speeded up considerably!

The only caveat being I have yet to determine what effect this has on my network security. I may end up having to turn that feature back on and live without WiFi access on the 'berry if it has any significant impact on overall network security.

Obviously your mileage may vary depending on what AP/router you use, but I suspect most modern AP's have some similar setting for NAT behaviour you may need to twiddle with.
