After trialing both Newsclip (2.2.5) and FreeNews (1.0.6), as well as Berry Bloglines and Berryvine RSS (nice interface), I turned to FreeNews because:
1. It does not depend on Internet Browser to be installed.
2. Has good web-based catagory management.
3. Is ~74KB vs. ~200+KB for Newsclip. Runs light and clean.
4. I prefer the default font over that of Newsclip.
What FreeNews could use is full article support, selective updating of feeds and manual sorting of categories/feed titles. Word is that the next beta release is due towards the end of the month.

Yes I am waiting too. What I do like of Newsclip is the integration of the core BB system.

I've been in touch with FreeRange and they indicate the end of this month (which we're at). I had problems w/my 8700c using FreeNews (not free, but SubscriptionNews). They have very good support and I too like the product and am assured that this next upgrade will solve my java IO problems.

litefeeds
Didnt see anyone here mention "LiteFeeds" ( (( LiteFeeds )) RSS for your mobile phone)
IMHO, its the best FREE newsreader around as far as pulling in the RSS content you want without all the images, or horizontal scrolling, etc.
Def. check it out, works for a bunch of mobile hardware as well...

@tommyboy - thanks for LiteFeeds, going to check it out.
From the *free* camp, I've tried a number of them (NewsCopier, et. al) and have come back to PicoNews so far as my daily reader -- it has some issues, but in general it works pretty well. It seems to have the best overall set of features like SMSing articles and such, but it does tend to have whacky server problems with some feeds (Engadget Mobile is a big one, BlogLines has problems with it too). Going to check out LiteFeeds and see what it has to offer...
(ps: does it annoy anyone else that the one app is called FreeNews, yet costs money to use?)

Gave LiteFeeds a run -- it's got a nice UI, but lacking in a lot of features. I like the way you can scroll right on an article in the list and it opens the story, combined with the Pearl trackball it's very fluid and works well. It has a clean, well built UI for what it does, it has a polished feel.
What I don't like is that you can't launch the article (you can get the full text, but you can't open the link to the actual web) -- I do this a lot, it seems. It also has highlighting problems and knowing what's been read and not, and you can't manage the feeds in any way from the phone (booo). One other thing is that you can Email an article but you can't SMS a link to it. (all of the previous are in PicoNews)
thanks though -- I'll check back in on it later when it's more mature...

FYI, NewsGator is releasing the RSS reader for BlackBerry, called NewsGator Go! -- today. It offers full synchronization between read state, clippings, etc with a free online account at Newsgator DOT com. Also synchs with FeedDemon, NetNewsWire, Outlook plug-in, etc.

Is this free? Since you spammed this exact statement on two RSS threads I'm subscribed to about *free* RSS readers, I'm going to assume that the BlackBerry version will be free, and not $29.95 like the Windows Mobile version? Free online accounts don't mean anything, we can get those anywhere.
What's the deal?
