Any way for a Blackberry to reflect the current time when moving from one time zone to another without having to manually change the time zone?

I do not think there is a way for the BlackBerry to automatically change the time zone. The calendar won't change all your appointments unless you want it to by manually changing the time zone.

You may argue that other "normal" phones do.. then why not a BB. BB has not been designed in that fashion.

Yeah, it is a pain in the rear when you are traveling. If you change the time zone manually you will completely screw your calendar up. Not worth it, just do the math.

The calendar isn't screwed up in these cases. If you're going to change the time zone then you need to enter new appointments under the time zone you're in. At least on the BB you can choose to use your home time zone or switch.

It wouldn't make any sense to switch your time zone and have calendar entries in an entirely different time zone.

Example: I'm in Central Standard Time. I enter a conference call for 11:30am CST. I travel to the west coast and set my time zone to Pacific Standard Time. The BB properly shifts the start time for the conference call to 9:30am PST. If the BB didn't do this then I'd get my calendar reminder for the conference call 2 hours too late. It works properly. People just try to outguess what the BB's doing. While in the new time zone you need to enter things for the current time zone. Don't enter appointments assuming that you're in you're home time zone -- you're not until you change it back.

That said, I don't change my time zone when I travel. That's just my preference.

So if I understand this correctly, if travelling out of my home time zone by air with multiple connections in multile time zones, and want my BB to show the correct time for the zone I'm in and send a proper reminders for flight times, I will have to manually change the time zone on my BB as I move from zone to zone, but then when originally entering flight times in my calendar, do I convert the flight times to my home time zone, or leave them in the "native" time zone as the airlines list them?

Convert times to home time zone. Better yet, most carriers that I am familiar with will send an itinerary to Outlook, and this will have that feature enabled.

Or, enter all times in your home TZ and just change the time.

It's personal preference it and it does depend on wehter you have to deal accross TZ. Takeshi's example is a good case for changing TZ and entering appt in the TZ where they will be occuring. OTOH, when I travel, I don't usually deal with anything outside the location where I am. So I set all my appts in my home TZ, and just change the time. That allows me to view appts in advance at the right time of day without having to convert TZ.

Bottom line is you can make a good case for auto TZ, auto time or no change, RIM just let's us decide. And it really is not a big deal to go to option->date and time and set it.

I read the above and I think it might explain my problem but I thought I would post for sure to confirm. Here is what happened.

I live\work in EST time zone and I traveled to PST. When I arrived I set the date\time option to PST. My clock display time was correct and my calendar entries were also correct. When I retuned home I reset my date\time back to EST.

Now, here is the fuzzy part. I cannot recall but I may have accepted an invite when I was in the PST zone. However, when I view several appointments in my time zone (EST) they are 3 hours off, I think. I am confirming with the team members that sent them to me but I am assuming I did. I get so many calendar entries I cannot recall what I accepted\changed.

So, assuming I received the invite when I was in PST would the calendar screen have shown PST in the invite. If so, I did not catch that. So to prevent the problem I would had to change the PST to EST before I accepted the invite? I suspect I am quite screwed not knowing that. I have some prior accepted EST invites that are correct and now there are some mixed in that are off by 3 hours.

Possibly, a consideration for future enhancement is an option on the date\time screen to set "home time zone" and a different field the user can change when traveling to "travel time zone." That way the user does not have to remember to "look" for the time zone in the calendar invite. Just a consideration to make it easier for us travelers.

+1 Storm 2 running 5.0.0.428 and under OPTIONS/DATE AND TIME, there is an option to auto update time zone. Choices are yes, no and prompt.

If the feature is that important, maybe it is time to upgrade to a device that provides this option/runs the newer software.

Merely trying to be helpful and provide any and all options.
