In holster = when its in a magnetic OEM holster [case]
Out of holster = when its not in a magnetic OEM holster [case]
Always = for all the time, whether its in a holster or not.

This is really a personal choice. If you have a genuine Blackberry holster, then it will have the magnet. Some after market holsters do and some do not. The magnet puts the device "to sleep" to preserve battery life. So if you use a holster with a magnet, you can set your profiles to act one way when it is holstered (In holster) and differently when it is out of the holster (Out of holster). Or you can set your profiles to act the same, regardless if it is in the holster or not(Always).

I would read the manual. You may find a lot of interesting features you can use.

Default Setting profiles with a holster

Is there a way to set, lets say the volume, to 8 while in the holster and 4 while out of the holster. When I set the volume to 8 in holster, it will not notify if it is out of the holster. Am I doing something wrong or will it only sound if you use the always button for In/Out of holster?

Not nice to hijack a Post.

To answer your question, you cannot have two different levels, in and out of the holster..

Smile Re: In Holster or out of Holster

Hello All:
I have a BlackBerry Bold 9700 and love it. However, I find the in-holster out-holster feature rather useless. And in fact, there is a trap to this feature that you may not be aware of. Because it uses a magnet in the case, if you ever travel to a Hotel that gives you a magnetic strip door card, and you put it in your pocket with your BlackBerry, it will wipe the signal and your Hotel door will not open. Many Hotels use these card and are aware of this problem.
Because I am not interested in the in / out - holster feature, I purchased a standard leather case and this problem has never occurred since.:

Simple, don't put the card in the same pocket as your case.

The profiles are actually very usefull. As I carry mine on my belt, all my in-holster settings are set to vibrate so as not to disturb when in meeting and such. Out of holster will sound, because it likely means I'm away from the device.
