Default 8130 Users - We need your help

Please Login to Remove!

Hi All,

I'm looking for about 5 people who currently have the 8130 to help track down some compatibility issues with BBSmart Email Viewer on this device.

If you would be willing to help, there is a free copy of the software in it for you, and additionally, I believe that there may be a flaw in OS 4.3 that has bigger implications for many other third-party application developers - in other words, if I'm right, you could be helping out a lot of people However, not having an 8130 here in person I haven't been able to conduct any thorough testing and this could just be a false alarm. My spidey sense is tingling though and I'm usually right about this sort of thing...

If you would be interested please PM me and remember to include an email address I can contact you on.

Update (15th Nov): Thank you for all your help everybody. We have now released an 8130 (OS 4.3) compatible version of BBSmart Email Viewer. You can grab it from our website: BBSmart - Software for your PDA

Thanks,
eZainny.

well, i did download the trial version of BBSmart email viewer and could not get it to work on my 8130. I had downloaded the 4.2 version and although it installs and I can access the options menu, it would not display any email in html and kept asking to set BBSmart as default after already having set it.

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8130/4.3.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/105)

I have installed BB smart and have not had any problems so far.

Seems to work the same as it did on my 7130.

did you choose the 4.2 version? Also, do you constantly receive the message when viewing each email to set it as default? i've done that and it continues to pop up. i don't believe i'm doing anything wrong. is there anyone else using it that has that problem?

Hi All,

Thank you for the offers of help. What I've seen initially is that about 50% of the time the application works fine on the 8130 and the other 50% not.

Interestingly, those who had problems also had problems with other third-party applications, which has led me to believe that there are actually devices out there with a dud OS and this may have been corrected at some point.

If I'm correct, I wonder how many 8130's were released to the public with this non-functional OS? (or even if they are still being released now?)

As I learn more I'll be documenting it on my BB developer blog: BlackBerry Developer SideShow

Cheers,
eZainny.

My Pre-Production TEST VZW 8130 unit from RIM (has property of Research In Motion stickers on it, and an generic blue/white RIM box) came with V4.3.0.60 (Platform 3.1.0.32)

The production unit I got has the SAME OS...

I have yet to try BBSmart Email Viewer on either.

There are screen shots here on Blackberryforms.com of a Telus 8130 which has v4.3.0.65 running on it..

VZW has yet to release the RIM OS package for download on their Blackberry support pages.

I just bought two 8130's through VZW if you can get some info on how to parse out which OS is which I can get at least two examples. I received my 8130's the day before the formal release 11/7/07.

My BB smart is version 2.3. I loaded it OTA and have opened and sent tons of email with no problems. One thing I am seeing is a lot of hour glass icons when switching applications. Not sure if BB smart is affecting the memory or if this is a sign of a memory leak.

I'm running the trial right now with no problems, in terms of formatting etc. On every mail I have to tell the phone to use the BBsmart viewer and clicking the box does not save this selection. Once I have selected view using BBsmart it still doesn't display the mail, I have to open the menu and manually select view using BBsmart.

Not sure if this is a function of the trial, my lack of understanding of the options, or the OS. Once I have selected the viewer everything is quite excellent.

I was only asked once to make BB Smart the default view. It opens all emails in the BB smart mode. There does seem to be more lag time when opening emails on the 8130 than my 7130.

I've triple checked this now.

Every time I open a new email I get prompted to use the BBsmart viewer. I check the box that says "Don't ask this again" and select "Yes" to view with the BBsmart viewer. Once this is done the email is still not being viewed by the software, I need to open the menu and select "BBsmart View".

This is the trial version, so I cannot say if it's just a restricted function or an OS issue.

In reading the PDF on the BBsmart site it sounds like functionality should be identical between the trial and full package. This would indicate that the things I'm running into are either a software issue or me simply not knowing how to manage the software settings.

You have opened the menu and manually selected "BBsmart View"?

I think I may have at least solved my problem.

At the end of the PDF it suggests the following:

Quote:
Finally, if after following the above steps the application still does not appear to be
working it may be due to incorrectly configured permissions on the device. To fix this,
go to Options xxx8211; Advanced Options xxx8211; Applications and scroll down and highlight
xxx8220;SmartViewxxx8221;. Bring up the menu and select xxx8220;Edit Permissionsxxx8221;. For all 3 permissions
(Connections, Interactions, User Data) set the permission to xxx8220;Allowxxx8221; and restart your
BlackBerry.
When you go into the edit permissions menu there will be 3 options listed: Connetions, Interactions and User Data. connections and User Data were set to allow but interactions was set to Custom. I changed it to Allow and everything seems to be working appropriately.
