Question Anyone tried Google maps v.2.3.2 on OS7?

Please Login to Remove!

Apparently Google has given up supporting products for the Blackberry platform. I've been on the Google Mobile Blackberry forums and there have been numerous complaints RE: v.4.5.3. There has been a problem whereby the text is way too small for anyone to read (even when zooming in). According to Google, the map data is "tiled" so it's not an actual font issue and they still have not figure out a way around this issue. The old version of Google Maps worked great on the Curve. I used to use v.2.3.2 on the 8330 and I still have a backed up (alx/cod) file for it. I was just wondering if anyone else has tried to load an old version of Google Maps onto their OS7 (or in my case the Bold 9930) device with any success? The latest version (v.4.5.3) is totally useless for reading street names as the text is too small. It's also been posted on the Google forums that posts regarding this issue are being closed by Google.

Blackberry Maps are OK but I feel it falls short of some features and functionality that Google Maps have. Anyway, I'm hoping someone has tried the older version with success as that maybe my next step.

Thanks.

You can read the street names when zoomed in? If that's the case then the problem is tied to the Bold 9900 series I guess. Frustrating...

4.5.3 works fine on my 9930, but the font is very small. I can just barely read some street names when I zoom in.

Yeah...the app runs OK; it's just the text size on the streets which is too small. You can see it for a split second while zooming in and then it re-adjusts to the small size. Again, Google claims it's because the map data is tiled together so there's no text font size to adjust. For some reason, the 9930 cannot display those tiles in an acceptable range. They have a million updates for Android (of course) but not for other platforms.

BB Maps isn't too bad but there's no traffic info. I am trying out BB Traffic but it doesn't display any maps. More of a turn-by-turn GPS application only w/o the map.

Has anyone tried TeleNav? It has good reviews on different BB forums. The link below is for a free beta, I think. Official version costs something like $10 per year.

While street name fonts are definitely too small, what I like about Google Maps is global coverage. Google has physical branch offices in different countries, so the maps are more or less up-to-date no matter where you travel.

Per month, not per year.
Telenav is awesome.

Tele-Nav looks good but I would love to find a turn-by-turn map that doesn't rely on the data services (almost like an old fashioned Garmin PND). I go fishing in the summer months up in rural areas that have pretty poor cell service so this app would be useless there. Plus I'm not all that thrilled with their privacy policy which I forced myself to read because of all the location sharing with third parties etc. etc.

Anyway, I contacted Garmin about their Mobile App for BB and there's none developed for the Bold 9930 yet.

As far as Google Maps is concerned, it works great except for that damn text size. I just hope they don't abandon development for the BB app.

You would be much, much better served to get a stand alone GPS device for use in fishing in rural areas. Then you also wouldn't have to worry about "location sharing".
