Default BB10 / BES Question

Please Login to Remove!

I was told that BB10 Q/Z10 does not require BIS or BES to function as internet device and just regular internet service will be enough, well as much as a benefit this would be, I was also told BES is no longer working in BB10. This means no more BES related functionality or security, and ActiveSync would be used.

Is this true? If I buy a BB10 device now to replace my 9700, will I no longer need BES and I have to tell my company to activate ActiveSync which I hated and left after trying with Android? After reading so many reviews, I still did not get much information on how the whole email system on BB10 works, non of the videos are showing any email demonstrations, or how AS works on the device.

A fine job by the BlackBerry marketing department.

BB10 devices will not work with BES 5
Older (non BB10) devices will not work with BES 10 - there is a new BES for BB10 devices, but...
BB10 devices WILL work with ActiveSync. In fact, they work well!

There is no more BIS in BB10. Sorry, it is gone.

There are lots of articles about carriers requiring a data plan, but not a BlackBerry Data Plan. I even activated a Zed10 on WiFi and got to ActiveSync just fine.

Thanks. I really don't mind lack of BIS, not important, so this means people who used BIS will have to rely on their provider's servers supply them with advanced functionality like contact syncing, push, etc..

For BES, if it is gone, and if we swap to AS, then the limitations of AS will come with it. I had problems with dialing extensions with the way AS worked, but maybe that was an android limitation. However one major shortcoming was the inability of AS to provide contact notes edit. You could not sync contact notes two ways with AS. Also simple exchange notes were not synched either.

Now, you are saying BB10 will require BES10, so there is still a BES option with BB10, is that correct? Will we need to have carrier to provide BES service?
It looks like you are now running on HTC device, do you have a BB10 device? I am trying to find someone who can do a complete review of e-mails over AS.

Yes, BES10 is still an option.
What gets synced through EAS is dependent on the version of Exchange. Exchange 2010 (and the Zed10) syncs notes and tasks.

I have both an 8X that I use every day, and Z10 that has some potential.

Thanks, do you heavily use e-mail on 8X? As a BES admin/hardcore user, how would you rate it's capability?

On a side note, I am keeping an eye out for a 9900, if you have any sources, please let me know.

I hate to say it, but they are all about the same for e-mail. I have an issue with the Z10 where I can make the fonts bigger. It is much easier to delete multiple e-mails on the Windows Phone, but that is subjective. Attachments are handled very well on the HTC 8X.

I have a T-Mobile 9900. It's basically brand new. PM if you're interested.

Isn't this strange? You are the only one so far who can report back with a detail from a BES user's perspective. If I check with my BES admin and tell them I will get a BB10, can't they just get BES 10 and migrate? Will I have to get my carrier to offer BES 10 service as well or will it be just regular data? I can guess why the e-mail sucks so much on BB10 if it relies on just normal data service. Also with lack of keyboard shortcuts, it will just make it even worse. This is why I thought about just getting a 9900 even though my 9700 is still in good working shape.

E-mail is fine on BB 10. I have been using EAS for years on different devices. It's fine.

I don't have any idea what the carriers are doing with BES service plans. No more BIS...
