I have a recently installed BES and I am getting this sequence of error messages in the application log.
DoSMTPCommand: Expected 250 or 251, got 550
DoSMTPCommand: Command was: RCPT TO: <validuser@ourdomain.local>
DoSMTPCommand: Response was: 550 5.1.1 User unknown
SendMailMessage: Sent [RCPT TO: <validuser@ourdomain.local>]
SendMailMessage: Unable to find a valid SMTP host
Alarm::Email: SendMailMessage returned failure
I can't find anything in BB help/support. This is a single-user installation and the emails are being relayed okay, it seems, so what do these messages mean?

Can anyone help please?

Thanks

Welcome to the forums!

Can you post the entire event? These messages indicate mail is not being delivered ... do people have domain.local as their SMTP address? A fully functioning BES environment requires routable Internet email addresses. SMTP error 550 indicates relaying denied.

The messages to me at .local should be alerts. As far as I can establish, the BB user's mail is going back & forth OK.

This is our first experience with BES and I'm not a full-time techie, so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Do you have an MX record set up in DNS for your local domain? I have seen this type of error on isolated mail systems before, where a product would try to grab the MX record, fail, and then connect to whatever was entered in the app configuration for the SMTP server. E.g. if you have "mail.somedomain.ext" entered as the SMTP server, it will first query DNS to get the MX record for that domain (to see if it gets back "mail25.mail.somedomain.ext" or something along those lines), then when it fails, connect directly to the system (in this case, "mail.somedomain.ext") on port 25.
I have not seen it with a BES yet, because our BES has access to our internal DNS, so I don't know for sure if that's what's happening.

Just so everyone knows, this is a problem with BlackBerry Alert trying to send configured alert messages to whoever was listed.

This is not service impacting as far as actual mail delivery.

I have seen similar problems and I think it was linked to changes in how the BES handled MX records.

What version is your BES?

Hi DW

Thanks for responding.

The version No. is 4.1.4.15, a new installation.
I too had the impression that the errors refer to the sending of alerts, what's the best way around this, please?
It seems that my original statement about mail going back & forth OK is not correct. (I now have the BB in front of me) The BB cannot send messages, probably because it is set to use Desktop but there doesn't seem to be any other choice, despite the phone being registered in BES, which is forwarding mail TO the phone ok.
I'm confused ...

Hi BLincoln

Thanks for responding.

I have domain.local listed in forward lookups on DNS at the domain controller - how did you get BES to access the internal DNS, please?

I cannot get into our MX records yet because they are hosted by a 3rd party & their Apache server is down at the moment, but I suspect there is nothing for .local there.

Cheers

I'll have to do some digging but I have seen problems in that version similar to this.

You may want to start a new thread on the email sending problem if you have not already.

Separate thread already started for the handset problem, thanks for checking this out for me.

Is there any config info that I can send you which may help?

Perhaps just how you have your alerts configured, specifically for the SMTP server and email addresses being used.

Hi again.

Since turning off the messenger type alerts to my workstation, the errors have stopped. Have you had any further thoughts because I'd like to be able to receive any critical alerts, at least until I'm happy the system is bedded in & running reliably.

Cheers
