I don't use Cingular (and you shouldn't either, Go T-Mobile! =P), but my friend does, and he says Cingular has disabled BB Messenger on their BBs. Is this true, and if so, is there any way to get around it and use it? If it's not true, how do you get it installed, because he doesn't have it installed.

Also, BB Messenger is like an IM client which uses PIN messages, right?

Ignore the warning. Lots of us it just fine on Cingular. I communicate with the other Mods on it. Yes its a fine IM client Pin to Pin.

So Blackberry Messenger should show up on the list in his App Loader and all he has to do is check the box next to it?

I tried this in my nextel and cingular bb. It does not work on the cingular side - pin to pin. I can send from my 8700 but i can not receive. I have tried this to and from cingular and nextel cingular What am I doing wrong?

It's actually an over the air download. It installs straight to the BlackBerry but you have to have Desktop Manager off.

it's working great on my 8700 also. I am having a problem adding a contact that is on tmobile. We both stay in pending on each others phones and neither one of us gets the chance to accept the others offer to be added to their contacts. That message never arrives .

I've seen similar behaviour with my colleagues on Cingular, while I am on T-Mobile. If I request by PIN, they receive the request, and accept, but I get the request back as an e-mail, so I see a 2nd entry as their canonical name, while the original request by PIN stays in Pending. Anybody else see this?

It kind of works - I have been able to successfully send BB Messenger messages back & forth, but their status tends to switch to "unavailable" really often...

Not on T-Mobile, just Cingular. However, I did see this same problem this morning when adding BB Messenger to several of my colleagues' BBs (specifically, the second entry and the Unavailable status). The second entry went away when the app eventually showed that request had been accepted. Both still had a bit of a delay in sending messages (but only sometimes) and the app would show the other person in Unavailable status. As soon as the message came in, though, it would change back to Available.

My guess is that it's got something to do with how Cingular's (and possibly T-Mobile's) network works with the RIM network to relay the messages. Since Cingular currently doesn't support the BB Messenger (if you call their Tech Support, you'll likely just get 'we don't support it, but can help you uninstall it'), can't offer too much more info at the moment. Will keep checking, though.
