Default BES +MDS none exchange: installation problem

Please Login to Remove!

hi,
we're developing a MDS solution and now we wanted to install the free developer version of BES.
downloaded and installed, selected
+ MDS
NONE (exchange, lotus...)
installation goes thru until SRP settings,
we entered values, checked validate: all ok

but then if want to proceed there's an error:
MAPI initialization error 80004005

environment: windows Server 2003 SR2

please who can help us ?
to test the MDS solution we dont need an email server,
only MDS and this should be possible, but how ?

THANX

Sounds like you downloaded & installed the Exchange version of BES. Where is the exact link that you downloaded the software from and process you used to obtain it? I've no experience using BES not integrated into a messaging environment (as I'm sure most if not all BES Admins here), so the more details you can provide the better.

thx again... it was really the wrong version.
he downloaded the express version which is free for one user
and he got a besx_4.1.4.exe.
now we ordred the 120-day-trial for BES for MDS applications,
and we got a besa_4.1.3.exe
and now we could install the version without any mailserver.
what was confusing: also the besx_4.1.4.exe o0ffered NONE
as choosen mailserver, but later the error was reported.
now its time to test our MDS solution

Hi ekkehard I am trying to setup an MDS only BES too - which options did you select during the install? Did you install the server first and then the MDS services? Look forward to your reply.

Wouldn't it be easier to just just the simulators (which have a MDS version as well)?

normaly you're right, but we had some situations applications running well inside the simulators but fail using BES-MDS esp. accessing an Oracle DB.

Hi!

ok first it is important to use - like ekkehard told you - the besa_4.1.3.exe for installing BES without Exchange etc. During the Installation Process you have the option to install BES with MDS only. In Version 4.1.X the MDS - Server is included in the BES installation package so there is no need to install the MDS Services seperate. Just choose the option BES with MDS without Exchange etc.

Then you need a valid SRP Identifier - wich comes to your E-Mail Account you registered the Developer-Version of BES before you could download the besa_4.1.3.exe.

Finally you will need an E-Mail Account with IMAP Access. BES needs this account to recieve E-Mails from the BlackBerry Devices during the Enterprise Activation process. For that i installed the hMailServer on the same Server where i installed the BES.

Hope this helps for the next Steps - and if you have any further questions i will watch this thread

Lars.

Hi Lars
Thanks for the info, I think I might have the wrong installer too, I am now waiting for my BB contact to send me a new download link, once I've got it I will give it a go. I will keep you posted. Thanks again

Hi Lars,

We installed a BES for MDS Applications yesterday but the EA didn't work. I'm not even sure the BES is correctly installed.

We had to install hmailserver to perform the install. Do we have to create an hmailserver user for each blackberry user? OTA EA didn't work, I suppose that's because our hmailserver is not reachable from the outside.

I'm not sure I understand : we chose this version (BES for MDS Apps) because we do not have our own mail server... but we are supposed to install a mail server just to perform the installation and activate the devices?

Well, we could activate the devices via USB using BB Manager... if only the BES was able to recognize the handhelds we connect to the server...

Okay, here's the answer : the imap server is needed to activate the handhelds OTA. No need to install a mail server, any imap enabled server should be ok. Only one account is required, this account will be used to activate all handhelds.

I tried with a Gmail account with imap enabled and it didn't work but it worked with another free email provider (laposte.net).
