I had no problem at all upgrading from .75 to .76 using DM 4.7 after deleting the only vendor.xml that I see. No idea what you guys are doing.

Still only the one theme file in the Java folder.

Anyone noticed that option to add bookmarks is missing in .76 or is it only my unit? Othewise everything seems to be running very well, I would say bit faster after upgrade from .75.

I can add bookmarks just fine in .76, but I don't notice any real difference between .75 & .76!

Thumbs up Huge Improvement

First Poster - Hello fellow Blackberrians...

I've upgraded to .76 last night on my VZW 9530 (from the stock the .65 version) using Desktop Manager (deleted the Vendor.xml file before connecting to the Storm).

Inital Assesment

  • Accelerometer is a lot more responsive (it now takes less than a second to go from portrait to landscape, and about a second to go back to portrait).
  • Camera is also way faster than before, lag for taking photos has been greatly reduced.

  • A very pleasant surprise is that the picture viewer is now usable. Before the upgrade, it was almost impossible to view the pics that I had imported into my Storm. Now even the thumbnails draw on the screen much faster, and viewing pics is a pleasant experience.

  • Switching from portrait to landscape is about 16 seconds (20 seconds to go back) on pics taken with my Nikon D200 (about 3-5 MB each).

  • On the other hand, imported pics taken with my prior BB Pearl took about 3-4 seconds to switch back and forth.

After the upgrade everything got restored the way it was before, Internet email (via Google) started working w/o a hitch, as well as all other apps, and a battery pull was not required.

I did have to re-do the OTA Enterprise activation with my BES server though, which takes about 10-15 minutes to sync, but other than that, I am very happy with the upgrade.

Gripes

Ok, here are the things that I wished had been fixed:
  • Editing text - I have tweaked the screen settings, but it is still very cumbersome to go back and select or edit text. This was a piece of cake with the trackball, but a nightmare on the virtual keyboard (I am a seasoned SureType user).

  • HTML emails - I still have to go to each email and manually download pictures, and agreeing that "my address may be revealed" warning if I do this. I've already chosen the setting that should allow it to download pictures automatically, so why this is still happening is beyond me (yes, this happens from the same senders over and over again, and it's very annoying).

  • I would like to keep my business email separated from my personal, not all bunched up on the main screen. This should be a simple fix (and not Storm specific).

  • One touch dial from the phone log - I'd like to press and hold on the log and have it dial the number, instead of having to reach down and pressing the hard button, since if I am scrolling on the list, it stands to reason that when I find the entry I'm looking for I should be able to do this.

Final Thoughts

Overall I am very pleased with the update, and hopefully the gripes will be addressed as more updates come down the pipe.
I've been using Blackberries since the 950 series days, and the Storm has the potential to be the best one yet.

Thanks for reading,
Paul

It will always do this... and it's by design.
BlackBerry devices are big on security and they don't allow automatic download of images which are externally hosted.

Again, this is by design and is how BlackBerry devices natively work.
The 'Messages' module is a catch-all mailbox and will collect mail from every account linked to your device.
Third party software such as 'Empower BES Mailbox' may help, but I don't know if it's compatible with the Storm.

It is not by design.
If it was, there wouldn't be a configurable "Download Images Automatically" field on the Options | Email Settings allowing you to change this.
It's boneheaded (since I have to manually do this anyway).
If I "approve" a sender, it should download images from that sender every time, just like if you were doing it on an Outlook or Gmail client.

I'm aware this one is by design, as stated on my post that this is not Storm specific.
That being said, there should be an option to segregate BES mail from Internet mail, instead of having to install 3rd party utilities (not a deal breaker, but it would be a nice feature to have out of the box).

Thanks for the reply,
Paul

Besides, you've posted this in the wrong thread, this thread is for .65

Sorry, Paul, but you're incorrect.
It is by design, and the "Download Images Automatically" setting is for images that are embedded into the message itself... not externally hosted images where the email message merely contains <img> tags directed to outside sources.

Additionally, the ability to segregate BES mail from BIS mail is a feature of BES starting with BES 4.1.5.
You could always contact your BES admin to implement this feature if your BES supports it.
It is a global change and will affect all users on your BES, not just your device.

getting back on track. my initial assessment stating that .76 was extremely laggy for me was a bit premature. as it turns out, i was missing some of the updated files.

inititally DM didn't recognize the updated software (wasn't telling me an update was available) so i used loader.exe to update. after this initial update, phone ran like crap. way laggy compared to .75.

so after messing with the phone for a bit, i started prepping for a downgrade back to .75. interestingly, when i plugged the phone back in, DM alerted me to updates. i was a bit confused considering i had already updated but went in and looked. sure enough, DM was telling me that there were some files that hadn't been updated to the .76.

don't ask me what happened. it's probably just a random fluke that no one else will have to deal with. that said, after updating the old files, phone seems fine now. no lag (well, not any more than on .75). hard to say if it's faster than .75 or not but it certainly isn't any worse.

I did not realize that this was a possibility with a BES setting. Can you tell me whether this is an IT policy setting or a configuration setting on BES server itself. I am running a BES 4.1.6 server. Thanks!

Since you have the one "catch all box" and the individual mailboxes (that BB puts on there for each account), why dont you just hide the catch all and use the individual ones?

BES email is delivered to "catch all box" only.

It's not an IT Policy Setting.
Turn on or turn off the Enterprise-Only Message Application icon in BlackBerry Enterprise Server software version 4.1.5

Im going to try updating when I get home. Im also experiencing much more issues with .76 than I did with .75

If you have an intel based mac you might want to consider setting up bootcamp and run a copy of windows just for stuff that you may need to run. Like the blackberry updates that can only be done in windows.

I just have a small 15gb partition for windows xp and use it for my updates. It just has windows, avg free antivirus and blackberry desktop manager installed.

Anyone have problems after installing .76? I just went from VZW .65 to the Bell Mobility .76, removed the vendor.xml before I updated, and it wants me to activate against my BES (4.1.6) but keeps telling me the activation was unsuccessful and to contact my admin. Good thing I'm the admin
