Unlocking allows you to use the phone on other phone companies...for example you could use an unlocked Cingular phone on T-mobile.

As mentioned earlier, just type those letters in. You don't NEED a field for input. An entry field will appear to enter the unlock code.

Just had both my Pearls unlocked with tmo. Easiest way is to call customer service (yes, interact with a human being!), give them your IMEI number and an e-mail address to send the code to. They were very helpful and nice about it. Got the code by e-mail 1-2 days later. Worked like a charm.

I submitted my request over the weekend to that cingular email address and I just got my email reply with the unlock code. WOW! I've only had my phone for a week too.

Thanks for the tip!

EDIT: Code worked, my phone is now unlocked.

No, you have to have an account, in good standing and the phone must have been provided by Cingular/ATT.

Going out of the country means your leaving your providers footprint. By unlocking the phone it allows you to use another provider, for example a provider in the UK if thats where you are traveling too.

Question Question on Step 1

I don't have a Cingular/AT&T SIM yet. I was waiting for them to show their good faith by unlocking the BB before I committed to a contract from them. Can I use a SIM from another carrier? I have a couple of active T-Mobile SIMs.

Thanks. Please no guessing on this question. I don't want to take a chance on permanently locking my BB before I've ever gotten the chance to use it!

You have to finish your first contract with them on that phone. Then they will give you the code if you ask.

quick question...

im on cingular, or AT&T now i guess, but i had two separate plans. one plan was my mothers phone and that was a BB pearl, but she has since ended her contract with cingular. i still have an open AT&T plan, but would like to unlock the pearl. is it still possible to get AT&T to give me my unlock codes? and how do i go about getting my account #? thanks!

I think you can tell them that you are now using your moms Pearl and would like to unlock it so you can use it in a diffrent country. This way you can use your acct number.

Default Ditto for T-Mobile as well...

Called T-Mobile yesterday and said I was going out of the country and needed my phone unlocked. The very nice customer service rep (haven't had a bad rep yet with T-Mobile...they are the best!) checked my account and I was elligible for unlocking and she took my request and said it would be about 72 hours before receiving instructions and the code.

When I opened my phone this morning there was a message on my phone with instructions of how to unlock. Followed the instructions and put in the code and Eureka my phone is unlocked!

Very simple. Very easy.

Yep, did two myself this week with TMo. Took less than 24 hours. It doesn't matter if it's not the phone on your account. As long as it's a TMo phone and the imei is in their database the will send you the code. All they want is your mobile number (to keep track of the account as you only get one per 90 days) and the imei number. That's all there is to it. TMo is great for this stuff.

Do your phones still access the net and send and receive email, and goto Tzone and My Account? I was told if you unlocked a TMo phone it would no longer access at least Tzone and My Account info.

Would I loose any features after unlocking my phone? At work TMo's connection is weak, I could change to another network and function as normal?

All it does is allow other carrier's sim cards to be used. Nothing else.

So, if I don't have another sim card it would not do anything for me?

If you get a corporate discount through work ATT will bend over backwards for you. I had my Pearl for about one month (switched from Sprint) and asked them for an unlock code and got it within 72 hrs. I also got my moms phone unlocked the next month withour having to wait the 90 days they require. If you use a corporate discount I think the reps computer shows you as a corporate customer and they dont know you are just an employee there and not a big wig. Def take advantage of these kinds of discounts.
