well, best thing to do is make a full backup... and download the version of the OS you hae right now. that way, if something goes wrong you can completely resore your device.

---

download the latest 5.0 build and install it. shrink and customize it as you see fit then load.

you will be able to just plug in your BB and have desktop manager restore your contacts / calendar.....etc.

as for things like settings and saved messages, your going to have to use desktop manager to restore individual databases from the save file you made before you did the upgrade.

Note: i do not know how much has changed from 4.x formatted databases to 5.x databases... so it is *possible* but not likely that restoring the settings tables will not work.

But, as i said, almost everything can be backed up independently. contacts, calendar, BBM contacts, tasks, memos. Saved wifi profiles, theme settings, and the like might become corrupted, but in all honesty, shouldn't take more than 20 min to fully restore!

good luck! and i hope you do decide to go through with it and pull the trigger.

Follow the instructions in the first "Attention" thread at the top of the 8900 Discussion Forum.

Backup your device and using DM, but upgrade per the instructions I just mentioned. You never know the results. But of the three I have done, no problems. Expect to possibly reset profiles and resign into apps. Write down or save your logins to these apps. Some programs or apps may not be on your Homescreen anymore, but back in the app/download folders. So some readjusting may be needed. I have never lost calendar and email items.

Good Luck,

Ken

Ok, I'm having the same problem (I just traded in my 8520 yesterday for the 8900, which I just got rid of my 8100 a few days ago for the 8520), not being able to get the 5.0 to be seen by my BDM.
My question is, is the 5.0 really worth going through a total wipe and all to get it? I have noticed that there are a few things out there that I'd like to have, but require 5.0 to install them.

IMHO, if the device is working correctly and as you desire, do you really need to upgrade?

Although small, there is a risk in things going wrong and certain functions or apps not working as they previously worked. The forums is full of upgrades gone wrong and large and small issues with a new OS.

I am probably in the minority here, but I still say, if the device does what you need it to do, and it isn't broken, then you really need to think twice before you try to fix it.

Thanks Dubdub. Being that I've only had it for a day now, everything "to me" is going great. It's just that I saw a couple themes that caught my eye, but require 5.0 (mine now is 4.6.1 I believe).
Other than that, I am happy with it and how it's working. I'll just ride it out for now.

Nice article. There are subtle changes that aren't readily noticeable. You may not need the new OS. But, it is like trading in a used car for a new one with more accessories. The old one got you from A to B, but the new one is more fun and feels better to drive.

What DM are you using. Have read some people having similar issues with DM 5.0. I have had great luck with DM 4.6 on all my upgrades.

What is the best version of 5.X to use, by that I mean stable? I want to use some of the new themes only for 5.X. Otherwise I'm OK with 4.6.

I dumped my DM 5.0, and went back to 4.6. It would not even recognize or see my blackberry. But the 4.6, though sees my 8900 does not acknowledge the OS 5.0, just the 4.6 that's all ready in the phone.

.411 has been perfect for me.

I assume you uninstalled any old device OS's on your PC before upgrade and did not try to upgrade thru DM. Just some ideas.

Ken

My laptop was just purchased a day before I got the phone. The OS that's on it is the only one.
And I tried to download by clicking the loader, not through the DM. I'm hoping that by having Windows 7, it does not make a difference.

Kamau,

Some added info may be of help. I got it googling your problem. I didn't read all of it to see the conclusion if any:

Thanks for the info. I just read all of it, and it mostly applies to DM 5.0. I have 4.7 (not 4.6 as I thought/posted), and it's serving its purpose for me at this point so I'm not going to change it for the moment.
As for 5.0 for my 8900, I'm gonna take someone elses advice I saw and just wait for the official version to come out. And just like with the DM, my current phone OS is serving my needs, so I'll stick with it for the moment. I just don't want to mess anything up at this moment either as I'm having too much fun with its newness. Besides, I'm now considering moving on all the way to the 9700.
Again, thanks for the info.

Your welcome Kamau,

It seems some folks have good luck and some don't on the upgrade. not sure why. I was scared to do it, although it was my third upgrade. Like you, I didn't need it. However, there are numerous minor changes I am finding that I like a lot. Hopefully the official version will be out for all soon. My carrier is very slow at that.

Another data point here. I use my bb for work, plus some browsing, facebook, etc. Did a full b/u of my 8900 (thru DM 4.6). Shrunk the 5.0 OS (.411) and installed via the loader. Entire upgrade (after original backup) took 20 minutes. Everything went smoothly, all data was present. 2 apps (facebook and another) had to be updated--the prompt showed up, I clicked 'OK' and they dl'd and installed, no hassle.

Now, I am NOT one of the hordes of people who jump on the forums within hours of release of a new OS version (mostly incremental betas) and gush about how much zippier the new version is, or how the battery life has vastly improved. (Seriously, how can you even tell that in less than 1-2 days anyway?) I am always skeptical of such comments (having made 3-4 incremental beta upgrades of OS 4.6 myself). Any improvement I've seen was marginal at best, eventually with slightly better signal strength but no major increase in battery life or speed.

So, I now am running 5.0. The interface seems slicker, and more responsive. (Dare I say zippier?) It really does seem faster and more polished (button design, etc.). Everything I've used works OK. Outlook, browser, Bolt browser, Google maps, facebook (updated), QuickLaunch, etc. I don't IM/text so I can't speak to that. Strangely, my trackball feels more reliable and doesn't seem to slip (I often cleaned it to no avail). Trackball settings are the same too.

So, for me, there is a bigger noticeable difference in the switch to 5.0 than in any of my OS4 beta updates. It does feel faster overall. The media player seems nicer too--not sure exactly why.

Ok, so I made the jump anyway. After I came home from work, I read these posts and others, and decided to give it another go.
So I uninstalled & reinstalled my DM (still kept 4.7 though), I did the same for the 5.0 for the phone, then I just went at it one slow step after another...............and Success! It installed on my 8900, and I must say even though it's only been an hour, it is a pretty nice update. I can't seem to get my CNN to open from the home screen icon I downloaded from CNN directly ( I get a message saying that "The protocol is not supported by the handheld. Please try a different url." I tried to reinstall it, but got the same result.
Other than that, it seems to be nicely put together.

Thanks to all of you for your help/input. Might be all for naught though, as that 9700 is eating away at my mind (and wallet).

Glad you got it to work Kamau,

I use the calendar a lot and enjoy the changes there as it relates to changing dates and times to move appts. On CNN could that be as simple as changing permissions to Allow?
