Tethering -is- using the phone as a modem.

This is confusing though. I thought the diff might be in terms of the data cap, but if BES users are supposed to be unlimited, then I don't see what the restriciton could be. I do know they sell tethering as an add-on, whereas on Tmob there's no additional charge.

Question is, why pay for it? (if you can tether without it...)

that's what I needed... in device manager for vista in properties for modem over bluetooth... it works... I'm on it now... took 6 hours to find someone who knew at att.. including the BB guys who had me clear out all traces of desktop manager and reinstall... what a day... all to save 30 bucks a month (I have a built in card in my laptop).
Can you be a little more clear with this? What exactly did you do in device manager?

Can someone clear this up for me (us)...

The booklet that comes with the AT&T Bold states that you can use the bold as a wireless modem. However, online at the AT&T wireless site, the online version of the manual states as one of the prerequisites that a user must have a Laptop Connect Plan.

My users are all on a BES and they all have an Unlimited BlackBerry plan.

The questions are:
1. Do they have to purchase the Laptop Connect Plan?
2. If they don't "have" to purchase a plan why does it seem like AT&T is telling you that you have to? (Aside from the obvious reason that they want to make more money)

Thanks all.

1. My understanding is that you don't have to purchase a Laptop Connect Plan. I tether now via Bluetooth with no extra data plan.

2. Why ask why?

Could you be more specific? What did you edit? Please post your settings. Thanks.

The newer version of ATT connection manager works seamlessly with the Bold. No tweaking is necessary.

Be VERY carefull... I'd review your data plan. The last time I checked most "unlimited" data plans are actually limited. Example: "unlimited" for a few carriers could mean 250MB month with an overage of $15/MB afterwards..

First, thanks to all who have added to this discussion, and to Mark Rejhon who did the original writeup on blackberryFAQ.

Now, my question to those who have been using this capability, do the modem calls count against your minutes, your data limit, or both?

Thanks,

I tried the new version. I get and Error 734 message. Also, whenever I run Desktop Communicator, it deletes the Modem Initialization String and I have to reinput them to get my connection to work.

Default I get an error while tethering

Hi All,

I get an error while I connect the bold to my laptop.

HTTP ERROR: $CODE$
$MESSAGE$
RequestURI=/

The connection is all successful. I have read the instructions on how to tether from this link Using BlackBerry As Modem - BlackBerryFAQ

After the bold in connected to the laptop (Vista) I open up the internet explorer and type google.com it gives the above error.
My service provider is TMobile.

Please help.
Thanks

First of all, I am using my USB cable to connect my Laptop to my Bold, it works very good where and getting a 3G connection is pretty simple.
Regarding the price, I was paying $30 a month for BB BIS plan, now for tethering they are charging me an additional $30 (total of $60) a month. The only problem I have with the price is that it has a 5GB cap, there will be some who will ask - "what happens if you go over 5GB?" the answer is don't even try; I was charged close to $3,000 (YES, THREE THOUSAND DOLLARS) when I generally pay around $275-$300 for a family talk plan with 5 lines... if someone here knows how to get it cheaper or at least take off that 5GB limit, please post it!
