Default No phone icon in 8700r...Help me please!

Please Login to Remove!

Just bought a used 8700r to replace my antique 6750. There is no phone icon on the screen however. Removing the battery for 30 secs. + doesnt' help. My SIM card is in the phone. When I Turn Wireless On, I get Data Connection Refused The fix for that posted on the FAQ doesn't apply apparently as there is no Mobile Network option....anyway, that's not the main problem, which is no phone service!

Any help appreciated. Thank you!

Whoever owned the device before you was using a BES, and the IT policy pushed by that BES to the device forbade the use of telephone services. What you need to do is search for "IT Policy" in the FAQ.

Can you press the green phone button and get the phone app to come up? If so, then the icon is probably hidden. Simply press the alt key and press the trackwheel and select "show all."

If no phone app comes up then the phone app is not installed on the device. The most likely reason for this is that the phone was restricted by IT policy from the previous owner/company.

To get rid of "data connection refused" go to Options >Network >data services, set to off. If you get to the Network page and there is no "data services" option then you can't turn off the message.

The fixes for the above problems would be to first remove the IT policy using this thread:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...ve-policy.html

That may add back the Phone app. If that still doesn't add back the phone app then I recommend updating the software on the device to the latest OS available. You can get info on that here:

http://www.blackberryforums.com/gene...-2-1-96-a.html

That will allow you to reinstall the phone app and also to have the "mobile network" option and the "data services" option.

Not to contradict John, but Data Connection Refused simply means you do not have a BlackBerry Data Plan and has nothing to do with the phone. Get a data plan from your provider.

At some point RIM did release a version of the OS (I think it was shortly after the Pearl was released) that had the Phone App unchecked by default!!! If you went to update the firmware, it would remove the Phone! As John said, try reloading the OS and make sure the Phone App is checked (later versions typically have this checked and you can't uncheck it!).

If John is right and the phone was restricted by IT Policy, follow his excellent directions.

There are two fixes for "data connection refused." One of course is to get the BB data plan. The other is to turn off data services under network/mobile network so that the BB doesn't search for the BB data plan, however, not all OS's have the option to turn off data services. I just assumed he didn't want to buy the expensive data plan from Rogers.

Thanks for the replies!

With the help of a very smart lady at Blackberry Support I got Version 4.2 from AT&T USA installed on my Rogers 8700r.

She told me how to delete the "vendor.txt" file so that I could load it.

After the software was downloaded to my desktop, I just did a search for the file and deleted it and then installed the software onto the 8700r. No problems at all.

I'm pretty sure it was a .txt. file - do a search for just 'vendor' to confirm maybe.

After the software was installed it was easy to take care of the "Data Connection" message as per the FAQ and responses here.

It's the vendor.xml file. That OS (along with instructions including deleting the vendor.xml) is in a sticky at the top of the 8700 forum that says "Attention:"
