i have the same problem. i think it is 3rd party app related. they sent me new phones, but it keeps doing it. im thinking pocket informants alarms and or visual voicemail. i think if they hit at same time it happens. vzw said it is a virus, but it has happened on 3 different phones. post a screen shot.

Could be any number of things. First step in troubleshooting is to do a battery pull. With the device on, remove the battery for 30 to 60 seconds, reinsert and let it reboot.

Let us know what that does.

There is no known BB virus, so VZW has no clue what they are talking about.

Have you done a battery pull recently?

I would think an OS upgrade should be the last resort? Especially for a relatively new user.

The o.s. upgrade is free.

Default same problem

my 9520 has been doing this everyday now, battery pull does bugger all. just have to keep tapping away until it wakes up, i get an audible tone so i know the screen is working, im on the latest OS and have even tried going backwards with OS but still the same problem.
tried different themes and no themes, security wiped in case it was an app, but no change, i think its just a poor build by a hungarian who thinks high tech is owning a horse and pulling the back end of a traban to work.

Default this may help

found thru a few searches and random links
if you take back off and just below the battery you will see on the left side an allen screw, (there's one the right with a sticker on it, dont touch this one)
turn the left screw 1/2 a turn anti clockwise, and bingo mine is now working perfect.. something to do with a lot were over tightened, lots of guff about vodaphone recals.

seems to have worked for a lot of people

hope it helps

First thought is that you now know why your friend got rid of the phone.

Second hand cell phones are rather risky.
