What format do ringtones need to be in?

I downloaded a mp3 ringtone and uploaded it to my device, I then selected it as my ringtone but it never plays when the phone rings...is this a possible bug in OS7?

I have no such problem. I have 9860, use an mp3 as ringtone and works out fine
