First of all, not all BlackBerry devices have WiFi.

Even on those that do, as far as I know, email, BBM and some third party apps won't work.
BBM, PIN, BIS email, blackberry internet browser, all will work on wifi under normal circumstances.

In this outage, I was unable to use the blackberry internet browser whether on mobile network or wifi, but I was able to use the hotspot browser on wifi.

I'm on Fido's BIS in the Toronto area and emails started to arrive around 2:30 am. As of right now everything is back, email, BBM and browser.

From RIM
Quote:
RIM Statement - December 23rd

A service interruption occurred Tuesday that affected BlackBerry customers in the Americas. Message delivery was delayed or intermittent during the service interruption. Phone service and SMS services on BlackBerry smartphones were unaffected. Root cause is currently under review, but based on preliminary analysis, it currently appears that the issue stemmed from a flaw in two recently released versions of BlackBerry Messenger (versions 5.0.0.55 and 5.0.0.56) that caused an unanticipated database issue within the BlackBerry infrastructure. RIM has taken corrective action to restore service.

RIM has also provided a new version of BlackBerry Messenger (version 5.0.0.57) and is encouraging anyone who downloaded or upgraded BlackBerry Messenger since December 14th to upgrade to this latest version which resolves the issue. RIM continues to monitor its systems to maintain normal service levels and apologizes for any inconvenience to customers.

That's the most complete statement I've ever seen from RIM. I'm not happy everything went haywire, but glad they shared the cause.

And if you don't update your BBM, I'm telling RIM it's your fault.

Anticipating the next question - point your BlackBerry Browser to http://blackberry.com/messenger

And I updated mine BEFORE the outage, so I can't get blamed (except in my house where everything is my fault).

Everyone here is now upgraded. My son tried to upgrade yesterday, when things started to go downhill. It failed and he lost all his contacts. Fortunately mom had a backup of his device so he got a lesson in doing an advanced restore this morning.

Hah, my email backlog has started coming in. The BBF reply-to-thread notices are coming in reverse chronological order, as in the last in is first out.

Yea, I'm getting the subscription emails from before I renamed the thread.

@jsanders

Where did you get the outage notification? Are you the SIM where you work? Trying to find a resource for these notifications. Thanks!

Exactly! That was the weird part. What kept the blackberry internet browser from workingon wifi during this outage. I totally understand the reason why RIM servers are involved in BB push email, but I see no pluses at all if all internet browser data is going through RIM servers by default. Had this NOT been the case, then this outage would have been BIS email and BBM/PIN only, not the complete data outage we experienced.

Why is our internet browser data all going thru RIM servers????

The internet browser uses the BIS infrastructure, the BlackBerry browser uses the BES infrastructure, and the HotSpot browser uses the local WiFi connection directly bypassing RIM's infrastructure.

It is ridiculously convoluted the way this was set up, and that is reflected in the general confusion about the way it works. Try talking to a developer about the myriad ways of making a simple network connection from an app, they will give you an earful.

I hope this is rearchitected into something a little simpler down the road, if not then may confusion reign supreme for many more years to come.
