The Pearl acts as a mass storage device and exposes a drive letter as a way to access data on a microSD card, if one is present in the phone. If you don't have a microSD card in there, you'll get the message you described. If you do have a card in the slot, ensure it's still seated properly.

Also make sure the card doesn't need to be formatted again. Sometimes they can go wacky and get a random error causing it to need formatting. If you have one of those 6in1 card readers yet inserting it in there to see if it loads up.

Hi.
I had the same problem.
If your Mass Storage Mode cannot be reached you have to unplug BB from USB slot and re-plug again, by working PC.
Your phone will ask you about Password. If you have one, please type the password.
Then is mass storage mode ON.
That's all.

If your company IT policy has disabled that option, it will not work. You will see a small red lock next to the option to use it as a mass storage device.
If you are lucky, the media manager through your desktop should allow you access via the app. Unless there is a red lock next to it too and then you are just SOL.

I have had this happen. Usually it is the chip's file structure got screwed up in some way. Can happen when transferring files or the chip is too full, etc.
Can you remove the chip and put it into a reader [meaning you either have a MicroSD reader or an SD adapter for the chip].
If so, can you then read the chip?
If not, reboot the PC.
If you can read the chip, then it's possibly the USB cord/connection going to the Pearl. Get a different cable.
Can the chip now be read?
If not, try it on another PC.
Does that work?
If not, then the chip needs to be reformatted [at least, that is what I have done].
When reformatting, make sure to select "FAT" under "file system" which is 16 bit, not 32.
Bottom line: When this has happened it has always been the PC acting up. And just like the Pearl, a reboot of the PC fixed the problem.

I had this exact same problem after an OS upgrade and the issue was in the advanced options to ENABLE Mass Storage in 2 places.
Under Advanced Options > Media Card
Mass Storage Mode Support: On
Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected: Yes
Tell me if this helps?

Dislodged Card
I had the same problem:
- Sometimes I could transfer stuff, sometimes not because the removable disk was not accesible
- For some reason I could ALWAYS see what was on the miniSD card when it was inside the Curve
So I turned it off, took out the card (which seemed to be a little crooked in the holster) and placed it right back. Now everything is normal and I don't have random glitches when I can't transfer any files.
That's my two cents

Reseating the Micro-SD card worked
Although I suspect the phone reboot was the real fix.

I've had this problem continuously with three different SD cards, on several 8100s, and across several OSs. Upon first plugging in, the blackberry will not automatically enable mass storage mode. It's not a problem with the PC.
My Jeep's stereo has USB connectivity, and I use it there as well as on two PCs. Probably about 70-80% of the time when I first plug in to any of these, I have to go into my media card options, disable, then re-enable media card support. Disconnecting and reconnecting the USB does not typically work without actually disabling media card support on the BB, and then doing so.
Is this just an 8100 thing, or does this happen on other blackberries? I keep my fingers crossed they will fix this bug every time a new OS comes out, but to no avail.

Yes, I had the same problem, and launched the media manager, and viola, I could access the disk again. Before that, it would just say "Insert a disk" whenever I clicked the drive letter.

Is the phone locked when trying to access the disk?
Hey,
I just noticed this. Reset my device, connected the USB, and the view folder option poped up. Great. That's what usually happens. Ejected and reconnected just to make sure it would work again, AND IT DID NOT.
Then I noticed that MY PHONE WAS LOCKED (via backlight timeout and autolock enabled).
So when you try to connect a USB cable to a LOCKED phone, it will not enable disk access. Just realized this, great security feature, and thought I would let you all know. Could this be THE ANSWER to this thread???

I think you're right.
The only thing dumber than this feature is the fact that you can't disable it.

worked for me:
How to activate the USB Mass Storage mode ?
it's pretty straightforward, just an option to activate. On your Blackberry device, from the Home screen, go to the Options and select the Media Card line. You will get to a page, please configure like this :
Media Card Support: On
Encryption Mode: None
Mass Storage Mode Support: On
Auto enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected: Prompt
Total Space: 999.9MB
Free Space: 999.9MB
