Default Email deleting question

Please Login to Remove!

I noted that on my 9900 I had the option to delete emails just from BB or from server, is this option possible in the Q10 or once I delete the message on the BB it deletes from server?

Really? That would be cool - since it isn't a part of ActiveSync (to the best of my knowledge) that would be interesting.

Thank you for the post. If this is available in the future, will it be part of OS update?

hope so but don't know. i tried to write blackberry directly about this issue this morning:

Subject: blackberry q10

I recently upgraded my BlackBerry Bold 9900 to a BlackBerry Q10. There are many things about the newer phone I like, but two things in particular are disapppointments and major blows to my business use of BlackBerry.

The first loss I have learned (to my dismay) is the ability to delete e-mail messages from the handheld only. It was a setting under Email Reconciliation called “Delete On” and I could set to Handlheld (which was the default) so that it would only delete from the handheld. Using activesync as your eimail protocol now, I suspect BlackBerry can’t do that or you would have included it from the get-go in the new Z10 and Q10 models.

I will tell you, in my practice I get 50 to 70 e-mails during each work day. If I am out of the office visiting clients or doing something else, I need the ability quickly to look at e-mails and respond quickly, if needed. The Q10 does that. But many of the e-mail messages also need to be filed under appropriate matter numbers back at the office in Outlook and Filesite. I need and want to keep my Q10 clean and nearly empty while traveling or on the road, but the current configuration harms my ability to look at messages more carefully when I get back to my office and file them as needed in Outlook and Filesite. The Q-10's mirror-mirror approach may be fine in some developer's mind, but it took away from me a major benefit of purchasing and using a BlackBerry device.

The other major issue with my new Q-10 is under Display / Message displayed on locked screen. The Q10 lets me save Line 1 and Line 2, into which i have saved the following:

[myname] [my worktelno]

[myfirmname]

Well, those two lines do NOT display when the Security / Device Password kicks in and locks the screen. The screen will display a date and some "next event" but never my two chosen lines for "Message displayed on locked screen." (Exception: sometimes when i re-start the Q10, my two chosen lines will display.) I need my two chosen lines to display on a locked screen so if I lost the device, any honest person who found it would be able to call my office and leave me a message. I called BlackBerry technical support about this, and they had me try various things but none solved the problem. Their other suggestion was removing and reinstalling the operating system, but I balked because my device had only been in use for two days since AT&T fed'exed it to me new. They also suggested I take the device by an AT&T store and see if a salesperson might be able to find something. I did that and despite a good bit of time spent by (and with) a very bright young AT&T salesman, the "Message displayed on locked screen" function still wouldn't work.

I can tape a stickie message on the back of my Q10 with "If found please call [myname] at [my worktelno]" (and have done so), so the ineffectual "Message displayed on locked screen" is not too horrible. But my loss of the ability to delete e-mails on the handheld only is a horrible loss. I have supported continued purchases of BlackBerry by my firm, but if BlackBerry cannot or will not fix the Q10 (perhaps through an operating system upgrade?) so that I can delete e-mails only, with regrets I will have to rethink my position on BlackBerry versus competing products. Thanks for considering these thoughts, and I would welcome any in return.

Very truly yours,

"displayed text on locked screen" update:

a very professional at&t blackberry support tech spent a LONG time with me tonight, phone home for some help too, and after everything we tried failed, he walked me through a device wipe. i'll need help tomorrow restoring my contacts etc. but the "displayed text on locked screen" text i programed on the two lines now consistently dosplays each time the device password time limit expires and locks the screen. (at leat for tonight!) hooray and thx at&t

q10 "displayed text on locked screen" update

after sleeping on this i decided to test whether my font settings were the problem, and i think they are

after last night's device wipe, my font was defaulted back to 8. i changed it to 14 (for my old eyes), and fairly soon the "displayed text on locked screen" quit working more tests and experiments, and here were my results:

8 point: display on locked text works
9 point: display on locked text works
10 point: display on locked text works
11 point: display on locked text works
12 point (and larger) displayed text on locked text quits working

i'd rather have 12 or 14 point for my old tired eyes, but i can live with 11 point to keep my display on locked text working

as i continue on with q10 for now, as a business user the loss of Delete on Handheld (only) choice is the most distressing change for blackberry 10. i see others have also complained more eloquently than i have. i will keep fingers crossed blackberry figures out a way to correct this serious design mistake. i don't want to argue about my choice here. i just want my choice back. if it cannot be restored, then i will eventually need to go back to a bold 9900 (assuming they are still available) or give up supporting blackberry at my firm

As far as I know, no carrier officially supports 10.2 yet, so you won't get upgraded to 10.2 now when you check on your Q10 for the latest software. In fact the maintenance upgrade for 10.1 only started to be rolled our a few weeks back.
10.2 has been out in beta for some time. As someone who would not go a month without loading up the latest OS on my 9900 this is quite a change for me to stick with my carrier's OS update schedule. However BB10 is quite a departure from legacy BB OSs and the updating of the OS to a beta version or even to an OS supported by another carrier is quite a different process than that for OS 7.1 and earlier.

I agree with you that not being able to just delete messages from the handset and leave them on the server is a significant issue. I used to keep my 9900 mailbox very clean. Equally annoying to needing to keep messages on my BB in order not to delete from my office Outlook, is needing to keep personal messages on my BB from my personal e-mail account. Hopefully OS 10.2 will correct this.

You know what I miss as well. ( I loved that delete function) and the ability to query the servers directly looking for stuff that wasn't on your berry.. crap worked better than outlook after 1+ year of email.

Read mail receipt/delivery recepits ...completely gone (even in 10.2)

and gmail label support and gmaps.

update, just this week under Settings / Software Updates, at&t served up a 10.2 upgrade which i got some help installing. so far so good, and Delete on Handheld Only does seem to be back and working. (caveat, may have to delete one at a time from handheld while blackberry works out a glitch?) so far the update seems good. i have some abbreviated outlook contacts that don't seem, like before, to be synching to the q10 but will keep working to see if i can figure that out

KB35669-When deleting messages from the BlackBerry Hub, messages are deleted from both the BlackBerry Hub and the mail server even though the "Delete On" setting is set to "Handheld Only" or "Prompt"

UPDATE, this morning i tried deleting messages in a clump, rather than one at a time, from q10, and none deleted from my outlook account. hooray blackberry

UPDATE. i put out some incorrect info the other day. i tested more deliberately this morning. when i deleted several test messages in a clump, they deleted from outlook also, even though i had set q10 for Delete on Handheld only. when i deleted them one at a time from the q10 (like the blackberry workaround message suggested, they did not delete from outlook also
