Go by the model number on the top line of the first screen on options > about.

The nicknames are a marketing thing, starting with the Pearl series as I recall.

either way the OS doesn't run off the name of the phone, so just match the model number.
you wont get very far trying to install a 9700 OS on a 9650

Thank you guys for the reply, what do you guys think that might be the main diff about the bold 9650 vs 9700, on the website blackberry.com the only main difference i can see in that the 9650 has 512mb RAM and the 9700 has 256mb, is there another main diff between both, which one would you prefer personal? ...peace...

Well, the 9650 is a CDMA model with a GSM radio for use outside the US, right?

You say you are getting the 9650, so why the interest in the 9700? If you are not settled on a selection and you are not restricted to one carrier, then choose the best carrier for you first, then choose the blackberry.
