cyberdrew, i am impressed!!! There is no way i can even think of doing this. I know i will loose my patience and break something.

3 questions

1) how often do we need to perform this operation? 6 mo, 1 yr?
2) what is blackberry's aftermarket model for peforming this maintenance?
3) how much would you charge ?

MyPearl,

I had read a lot of posts on here about people trying to clean these things as well as some folks complaining that their trackball only scrolled in one direction or the other so in my sunday boredom i decided to pull it apart. I've had my unit for about 3 months now and it was functioning perfectly and the parts inside were fairly clean but i can see that over time it will be an issue as there are some really good spots for dirt to collect in the moving parts. We all still have warranty on our pearls so if you have a problem with the trackball during the warranty period I would simply send it in for replacement. I hope that the entire mechanism will be available as a replacement part at some point for a nominal fee.

To answer your questions,
1) how often do we need to perform this operation? 6 mo, 1 yr?
Hard to say but I think you'll notice a performance degradation if it gets too dirty.

2) what is blackberry's aftermarket model for peforming this maintenance?
I have no idea

3) how much would you charge ?
I wouldn't be interested in doing other peoples phones. The entire job only takes about 10mins once you know how it works so i would hope that service departments won't rape people for this service but againxxx8230; think warranty while you have it.

I am concerned. Am I missing out on some feature or technique?
I did not know that the trackball needs to get "dirty enough to use it."

Sorry, could not resist.

I can't even use my tracbkall to scroll down, there is no reason I should have to perform open heart surgery on a $500 phone, anybody else know a way I can get this to work correctly?

I just spent 2 hours, lost the trackball, couldnt get anything back together after taking it back. So now I just threw my pearl in the trash and said screw it. It is ridiculous that you even have to go through all of that just to clean the damn trackball. Make a better product/easier to clean if thats what they are suggesting.. arggggggggggggggggggggggggggggg

I agree... They should have made it a little more "maintenance friendly."

yes, the blog works. To be frank, i would not figed with my phone until the thing breaks down, any case, i have the one year warranty, i get a new one if it cannot be fixed, after this, will send it to RIM for getting the track mechanism replaced, but by that time, pearl would be cheap enough to buy a new one for $100... or buy one from ebay and use the parts at a place i know locally...
