okay i have a few questions in regards to this topic. i've been a t-mobile member for quite some time now and have had the pearl since it became available, as well as a few other earlier blackberries. my contract is just up and i'm trying to see what would make more sense.

i noticed that the 8130 is only available for cdma carriers. i looked into verizon and sprint and both of them offer this phone. i've only ever had sim phones so i'm not really sure what, if any, benefits or detriments will follow the switch.

i live in the ny area, and am pretty sure coverage is good for all of the above. as far as data is one faster than the other?

as far as features is it worth me even switching over, minus the camera and video is the 8130 a faster phone?

I, personally, wouldn't switch from the 8100 to the 8130. There's not enough difference in the devices. Also, 4.3 still has a few bugs. All you really gain is video and an external card slot.

thanks for the response, i guess i figured that the device benefits would be minimal, but would you know anything about data and connectivity speeds?

I think the 8130 on the Verizon side is an awesome phone... I have had little to no problems out of mine and I have had it since it has been out.... I'd say go for it.. and as far as you being in NY Area You might want to check the coverage map on Verizon Wireless' website... I think you're okay tho. What do you mean by faster? I think the 8130 runs pretty smoothly and fast.

The Data and Connectivity speeds seem to work just fine in my opinion.

it looks like my area has full coverage. the 8100 seems to be a bit sluggish when loading apps and viewing pictures. i know that the 8130 is very similar hardware, but i'm wondering of general usage on the phone is sped up at all? also i'm really interested in finding out if data with verizon is faster than with t-mobile.

Never had an 8100. Browsing through pictures and switching through applications seems to go at an excetable speeds for me!

heh i guess that was the answer i needed to hear. i just hope that if i switch to verizon i'm not limiting myself in the future

The only speed difference you will see is the download speed between EDGE and EVDO. EVDO/1XEV is faster.

i'll definitely be all over that when it does become available. but does anyone know which carrier they'll be releasing it to first? or if it will be a gprs or cdma phone initially. i would hate to switch to verizon then have to wait an extra 6 months for them to release the cdma version of it

In my opinion Verizon is faster. My friend has t mobile and I have Verizon both of us have opera mini and my BB loads so much faster.

that is exactly what i needed to hear, hah.. have you tried using his phone? i'm assuming it's an 8100. have you noticed any speed differences in general usage?

Yes to me the new os is faster and I like the little differences the way the address book looks and the way the calendar looks.

If you're comparing an 8130 on Verizon to an 8100 on T-mobile, you will notice a speed difference when using web based apps. The 8130 offers EVDO support, T-Mobile uses EDGE. EVDO offers higher connection speeds, the 8130s on Verizon and Sprint both support EVDO. To me that is the biggest difference between the 8100 and the 8130, the camera's nice, the side loading sd is nice, but EVDO is the clincher. (provided your area supports it, some areas don't have EVDO reception on either carrier. However if you live in a major metro, odds are you will.) I use the web and download alot, so the faster the connection, the happier I am.

it looks like i have all the information i need. i'm goign to call up verizon today and see what kind of deal they have to offer me, considering i've been with t-mobile for 6 years now

You may want to think again. All new model BlackBerry devices arrive FIRST on GSM/GPRS/EDGE. If you're looking at jumping on the latest 9xxx series when it's released, then plan on waiting a ton of time before it becomes available on Verizon.

The speed difference on EVDO vs. EDGE will be only slightly apparent from the phone's interface. Predominently, you will find that the best enhancement to speed comes when you have the phone tethered to a computer. If you want to tether on Verizon, there's an additional $15 per month charge when on the BES plan, or $30 when on the BIS plan. Total price is $60 per month just for data whichever way you go.
