Default Difference between BB OSs

Please Login to Remove!

I have the 4.2.0.42 OS and was thinking about upgrading to the latest .62 software.

Can anyone tell me the differences between the two?

Also, if I upgrade to the latest software, will my old files from the OS get deleted during the process? In other words, will I have a brand new phone with the new software as if I never had the old one?

I ask this last question because I am worried that every time I upgrade to the lastest software, there will be useless files clogging my phone from the previous software.

Thanks and please help!

The latest OS TMobile released is .64. The latest OS for all the Pearls was released by Cingular and it's .69. All OS's will work on all Pearls. They are all produced by RIM for any of the 8100's.

When you upgrade it will make a backup, wipe the phone completely, load the new OS and restore your backup so you won't lose anything.

The later OS releases are much more stable, fewer error messages and bugs. Also, support for 2GB media cards was added in later versions. The only downside of upgrading is losing the screen auto-dim disable feature.

Are you saying that upgrading to the latest OS will not allow my phone to dim when left alone? That's what auto-dim is right?

If that's true that I would rather wait until they come up with a software that would still allow auto-dim.

Thanks.

I'm saying that after you upgrade you will not have the option to disable auto-dim. it will always and forever auto-dim. Many people here don't like not having control over it.

I get it now. Thanks. Do you think that Rim will release an upgrade that will give users the option?

Thanks.

The rumor is it's gone for good. However, there's been a lot of complaining about it on this board and stuff on this board does get back to RIM. So, it's always possible but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Complainer here. I liked having my bright screen all the time, but I'm getting over it.

You don't need to upgrade software to get the themes. See this thread for adding the other carrier's themes

http://www.blackberryforums.com/ring...-4-2-only.html

and yes you can load other carrier's OS's. The OS's are all produced by RIM and will work on any 8100. And as far as warranty goes, I've heard people say you may not get support (you'll get more support here than anything from your carrier) but I don't think it voids your warranty. I run Cingular's released .69 OS on my TMobile 8100 as do many people. If you're going to upgrade, I recommend the .69 from Cingular and you can follow the instructions in the thread listed above to get the themes. If it becomes a warranty issue you can always load the original version back on, too.

Yes, it supports Italian.

After loading Desktop Manager and downloading and installing the Cingular OS package to your PC please be sure and delete the vendor.xml file located on your PC in the following folder: c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader. Once that's done plug in the BB, launch Desktop Manager, and it should prompt you to upgrade.

I recommend doing the upgrade and the themes install in two separate steps as I've heard some get errors when trying to do them at the same time. After the upgrade is complete then replace your blackberry.alx file with the appropriate blackberry.alx file from the link above. Be sure and use the .alx file that goes with the Cingular .69 OS. Then run Desktop Manager again. You should then have all the themes.

You need to replace the blackberry.alx file located in the directory I specified with the one from the link....be sure it's for the Cingular .69 8100 OS. Once you replace it just run Desktop Manager again and run application loader. It should say that "core applications" need to be updated. Don't use the "add" function in Application Loader.
