Hi all, I'm new to BBforums but not new to the bb. I have decided into getting a tethering application. They seem to be pretty commercialized programs. I believe one of them is called tether. Are they legal? Will I get in trouble with sprint? I don't want the mobile card because its a whole new contract, and very expensive. I do not have and don't expect to have 4G for about another year or so according to sprint.

Are the programs legal? I believe that they are, although I doubt that it has been tested in a court of law.

Will I get in trouble with Sprint? You certainly could if you are detected using it. Technically Tether is sold to make it easy to connect, not to circumvent the contractual agreement between you and Sprint.

And to answer the next question that you will likely have: Will you be detected? Nobody knows, although i would guess that the probability of being detected would be directly related to the volume of data used while tethering.

You should know that if they catch you it's possible they'll simply terminate your account on the spot. No appeal, no do-over.

The Tour is tethering capable and Sprint does offer it for a fee... you might be lucky and use it for free or a month or so but Sprint can slap you with a charge at any time if they catch you. Your line won't be cancelled or terminated. You'll just see an extra charge on your bill.

I was told by a Sprint rep that they no longer offer tethering to non-business customers. You might be able to do it but eventually they would see it because your data usage would go much higher than usual.

You can tether no problem sprint does not check for that, I use over 3 GB a month and no extra fees or calls have came from sprint. 3GB is alot so if you no where near that then you have nothing to worry about.

They advertise unlimited data so I really don't get how these companies don't understand unlimited.

It's called a "fair use policy". Unlimited but within reason. Yeah, it's oxymoronic but it's also become the industry standard. There's always going to be some asshat that insists on testing the system by streaming music 24/7 or tethering to download porn just because his plan says "unlimited". He and his asshat buddies will ring up 100+ GB of monthly data usage. Once folks start doing it regularly the network (and all other customers) suffer.

So they re-defined "unlimited" as far as cell phone data access goes. It's also withstood legal challenges.

The Tether app runs through application data. You won't see extra fees unless you go over your data limit as said above. Go to the Tether site below and try out the trial. It is legal to use Tether and you can find it on app world.

Sprint main pitch is unlimited, why use that word if it's not that. Sprint is not paying for each GB of data, they probably have an att T1 at each tower with no data cap. SO HOW CAN A COMPANY CHARGE ME FOR USING A CERTAIN AMOUNT OF DATA, HOW DO THEY EVEN COME UP WITH THE PRICES.

It's all BS on these data pricing plans, they just want you guys to believe it's hurting the network. So when they raise the price or do an att move they want you to believe it's because of all the power users, not that they want to make more money. First att will pull this crap, then verizon, and last sprint. When sprint does it I'm gone.

I agree that the phrasing is poor and not at all transparent to the customer, but the fact of the matter is that the contract is legal -- just because you haven't read all of the fine print does not release you from the legal obligations. Would I prefer that they be more transparent and direct? Yes, that is what I advise all of my clients. Do my clients always listen to me? No, they do not.

Ask iPhone users if they think the traffic on the network is effecting their speeds.
