You don't have to remember the alpha-numeric keys at all. The letters are on the keys; you just have to type some keys twice for the letter you want. For example, you would hit the 1ER key twice for an e rather than typing the whole word first and letting SureType do its thing at guessing your word. It does an excellent job, though. As go2duke suggests, it's very intuitive. I've gotten to where I can type pretty lengthy e-mails with no problem. But just as a fallback, I do use bbSpell.
You get the same feeling of SureType being off if you type a password in a password field. There you have to sometimes press the key twice to get the letter you want.

That is the whole reason they teach you typing in school so it's 2nd nature and you pay the most attention to what you want to say, not how to type it.
