Hi,

What type of data does BB messenger use? Currently, I only get BB browser free. Both WAP and Interner browser are chargable ?

Hello Rob,

Your on O2, If you do not have blackberry service on your mobile phone then you probably will be charged for BB Messenger. Speak with O2, Depending on your tariff you should be able to get unlimted blackberry service for around £7.50 - £10.00 a month, if you havent already.

In fact, i just read you post again, If you get Blackberry Browser free, you will get BB messenger free and emails free.

make sure you log into BlackBerry Internet Service and register if you haven't already.

Because its PIN messaging, I would assume if you get unlimited e-mail, bb messenger would be free.

I want you to get confirmation from o2 about your charges as they scrapped additional wap charges in February 2008 as I explained before.

Here is a link from the o2 website regarding BES packages (if I remember correctly you said your were on BES) it clearly states that the only extra charge is for mobile web. Mobile web is a different gateway from 02 wap and this is only used by Opera Mini and only if the mobile web tcp/apn settings are entered onto the device. If these apn settings are not entered then there is no danger of accidentally going to the mobile web. I have never had any mobile web charges.

BlackBerry from O2 - Email and Internet on the go

BBmessenger is a RIM application and therefore uses Data from your package. Practically all 3rd party applications will use the blackberry.net gateway.

It may well be that when you got your plan o2 sent you an email regarding the terms & conditions of your plan, they sent this to me too and I discovered that it was old out of date literature.

Please take time to find out as it will put your mind at rest about data charges. Make sure you talk to someone who knows about Blackberry Tariffs as customer servives in the UK regarding Blackberries is not the best to put it politely.

Do you have an online account? you should be able to log in and look at your bill and there should be a page there showing you what you have used so far. Go to recent charges and select internet & browsing. It will itemize if you have used blackberry.net or o2wap and if there are any charges for it.

As you suggest, it should be very easy to find my relevant data charges. Unfortunatly with o2 and the company I work for nothing is ever easy!!!

I work for a very large company that have devised a tariff with o2 just for staff which I believe is where the complication comes from. Below are the issues to date with both my BB and N95 through this tariff.

* o2 say that I get 5mb free on the N95 - I used 3 mb last month and got charged for all of it !

* My company say that all email is paid for on my BB but all browser data will be charged to me !

* o2 say that on the BB Blackberry.net is unlimited and therefore not charged to me !

I think your suggestion about registering on line may be the way forward. If I'm totally honest the money side of it doesn't really bother me, it just frustrates me when o2/work tell me three different stories.

That is o2 for you I suppose.

I think the problem with the N95 is that if I say bought an N95 i would get a 5mb data allowance. Being a business device it may have had that 5mb cancelled. Not sure.

Similarly if I had an o2 voice plan on any old nokia i would get a 5mb data allowance but once I get a BB and get a Blackberry Interenet Service package that 5mb allowance is cancelled (even thought the voice plan is the same)and I use my BB allowance instead.

I wish you luck in finding out what you are charged for as it does help to know. o2 however can be very fair as any changes to wap charges are usually across the board.

You kind of have a double whammy with work & o2 to contend with.

If I go into "browser configuration" I have three options BB browser, Internet browser and o2 active, are these three different gateways? How does WAP fit into this ?

If I access the web via BB browser and then put the address WAP.Blackberryforums it takes me to a much better layed out version of BB forum. How am I accessing a WAP site via the BB browser?

.............I'm now totally confussed !! Please help as I'm very interested but very new to this world !!

A wap site is merely a site that has been optimized for veiwing on a mobile device.

it is nothing to do with o2 wap's gateway although o2 active is a wap site. (confusing I know). Generally speaking if you go to o2active than you are using o2wap gateway, similarily if o2 sends you an email and you open a link in it it probably takes you to their wap site hence o2 wap. if you go to o2 active there is a google search bar etc so it is perfectly capable of going to the web.(O2 wap)

It is just that the different browsers use a differnet gateway to the web and o'2s preferred gateway is what they call o2wap. The BB browser uses Blackberry.net but you can still view wap sites as they are just optimized for viewing from a mobile. The BBC has a wap site, as do lots of other sites, Ebay, Amazon etc.

I do not specifically have a browser called BB browser, just o2 and internet browser but I would imagine internet browser and Bb browser is one and the same but do not hold me to that!

Does your BB have wifi?

EDIT : just checked, it does not have wifi but has GPS.

O2 active is an option from my favorites along with BB homepage (if I hit the browser icon). That suggests that I can change gateways from favorites by hitting either "o2 active" or "home page" within "bookmarks". I therefore do not need to change gateways via "browser configuration" if I choose not too ?

Although your default browser 'should' keep you on blackberry.net. It is just the way o2 has set it all up.

I do get a few o2 wap usage items listed on my bill but it is only for a very small amount and I am not charged for it so I do not worry about it. I do however go into o2 active occasionally for a quick look around but very rareley, there's nowt there lol!
