Default ebay app 2.1.0.7: why does it talk to webtrends.com ?

Please Login to Remove!

I recently updated to this from an older version.
During the start, i was several time presented, that an ssl cert for dc.webtrends.com does not match.
This occurs because *.webtrends.com is blacklisted in my domain. All traffic for blacklisted domains is sent to my proxy. Therefore the certificate mismatch. This is normal.

What I dont understand:
Why on earth is this application talking to webtrends anyway - it is an ebay app. It should talk to ebay, not, webtrends. The old application did not behave this way.

In addition, the blackberry built in permissions management cannot be used to identify/block unwanted traffic for this kind of app, because the ebay app is not "third party" but an "addon" and therefore trusted.

Is there a way to edit the permissions for "addon" applications ?
Until this i did trust RIM, but now I start to think different.

You can't edit the permissions for RIM apps. As for why it talks to webtrends.com you'd have to ask RIM. They must have a reason, though.

thats what i guessed. But, good to know that you also think, this is not editable.

Regarding RIM, of course, anyone has a reason for anything.
Either, they pay webtrends for gathering statistics about their products usage, or, another third party is interested in blackbierries using ebay.

Conclusion:
It is safer to use third party apps then RIM apps, because you have at least some control over them.

I definitely wouldn't go THAT far.

The webtrends.com website tells what they do -
Mobile Analytics | Webtrends

They are gathering data from your phone regarding app usage, web sites visited, and so on, and sending it back to RIM or eBay or other parties. They use it to send targeted advertising among other things. As to why RIM is using it - that would be a question for RIM and/or eBay.

Check the modules of the eBay app and see if there is a module for webtrends. If so you might be able to deny it premissions. When I was using Ubersocial for Twitter, I noticed it had a module called Flurry, which is similar to webtrends. I was able to deny all permissions for the Flurry module and the app still worked, although it would nag for permissions for Flurry.

There are probably a lot more apps using the likes of webtrends and flurry than we know about as mobile advertising and marketing are a hot trend now.

There aren't any obvious eBay modules that go with Webtrends. Even if there were, you still can't change the permissions for any of the eBay modules.

I would still use the RIM app before using a 3rd party app, though. I'm sure as Daphne points out that it has to do with advertising. Usually, though, if any information is collected RIM will post a notice in the agreement when you first run the app after install.

Definitely agree with that, which is the main reason I stopped using Ubersocial and went to T4BB.

I have to confess, I did not read the agreement thoroughly. But, I will install the programm again.

According to t-mobile, RIM might not always tell you that, what, and why your data is collected. Therefore t-mobile germany blocks Wifi and cell tower triangulation in blackberry maps.
