O2 have just told me that they could get it working if I were to move to a corporate contract (I presume by that they mean BES). Oh, and I would have to pay off the balance of my BIS contract first! I think I'll wait and see what happens with you guys.

I feel a letter to Ofcom coming on. . .

So according to O2 you have to have a BES corporate plan in order to use wifi? That makes a lot of sense. *shakes head*

My thoughts precisely. That is why I wrote to the O2 Chairman/CEO today to ask him politely to knock some heads together.

Unfortunately not, the last response I got was that it had been escalated internally and we were awaiting a response of either "it's a problem, we'll fix it" or "it's by design".

(runs for cover as members read the words "it's by design"!)

If i don't hear anything today i'll chase them which means I would get a response Thursday night.

My thoughts to this would be that there are quite a few docs from RIM which detail features over WiFi using BIS and BES and i'm sure I have read that they provide this service to BIS users. Anyhow, they haven't said this yet so everybody keep calm!!

I'll be very interested to hear if you have any luck. I got a call from O2 yesterday because of my letter to the CEO. I was basically told that I wouldn't get the functionality because O2 don't have a WiFi proposition for BIS. I argued that the product is sold as having WiFi but I didn't get anywhere.

I find this far from satisfactory, but I don't know where to turn after this. I'm considering my next move.

Oh wow that doesn't bode well.
I did chase up yesterday but just got the same response.
What i can't understand is that if this is by design then how come tech support at O2 and RIM don't know about it!
You'd think it would be the first thing they'd check.
I'll keep chasing and let you know.

I have now heard that this issue is not by design and should be working for all BIS users. I have been asked to carry out some more tests and I have emailed the info off to RIM.
I await to hear back.
Good news though, it looks like we are going to get a fix!

That is fantastic news. It's also good to see that O2/RIM haven't taken the easy option and said 'it's by design' so they don't have to do anything about it.

Great stuff Tailor! Do you anticipate that the fix will work for us all automatically once it's rolled out?

It will likely be fixed in a future OS. We may never even know what OS it will be fixed in. Since they are currently working on 4.5 I wouldn't expect a fix until OS 4.5.

Hi John, was this in the correct thread? Issue will a service design issue between RIM and O2. It already works for other U.K operators.

Good work Tailor

cheers

It's possible an OS upgrade won't be necessary. I've seen this problem happen to others with other carriers, though, but admittedly I haven't followed the issue as closely as you guys have. Hopefully, it's just a backend fix.

I've just taken delivery of my first Blackberry (BIS) on O2 and for the past few days I've been working my way around this problem but with no success.
It's comforting to know I'm not the only one who is having this issue.
Thanks to Tailor for the effort put into finding a solution...hopefully we'll have a fix soon!

I hope they do fix this because I have been on the phone to O2. They are trying to palm me off!

Edit:// They then had the brass balls to tell me that the problem is with my wireless router! What?! I can make connections just fine to the server from a command line prompt! I just told them they were fobbing me off and for £70+ a month spend, I can take my business elsewhere! My 8120 is going back and o2 can kiss my...

Hey guys -

Been reading for a few months, finally took the plunge and got my BB a few days ago. O2 didn't enable BIS on my account for a few days, during which time I had the greyed out wifi logo, and was able to browse the net.

My BIS stuff came on today - (EDGE/GPRS in caps) and I set up my email etc. Shortly after my wifi logo went fully white and I had the green tick. Having read this topic, I disconnected the mobile network and sent myself a couple of test emails through my flat's wifi - all working perfectly.

A couple of hours (of un-BB) work later, I look and wifi is grey. I haven't been able to get it back to green no matter what I try. I'm assuming that's the whole point of this topic...?! Really annoying, because I definitely, definitely sent email through a green tick earlier!

If anyone's got any good ideas, I'm all ears...

Regardless, nice to meet you all

ben

Problem:

No BIS account - greyed WiFi icon.
Enabled BIS account - working WiFi.
A couple of hours later - not working again.

Possible cause:

Carrier have disabled WiFi service for BIS account.

Recommendation:

Call O2 and ask them why they have disabled WiFi on your BIS account.
