Slight repost of something I put on CB, but thought it might assist those in the UK thinking of getting one:


I can confirm that it works fine on O2 in the UK - no lost functionality at all from what I can see.

I got one this morning - emails, browser, 3G all fine. No tinny sound, no flimsy slider, no problems at all actually. Camera is v nice (much better than my 9700).

Frankly, if you want the Torch so bad, just get AT&T. Even GSM phones in North America have a hell of a time jumping carriers. The problems I would ANTICIPATE are

1. Making sure the SIM slot is released
2. Pulling teeth to make sure data plans and service books line up
3. No 3G. Period.
4. No UMA (calling over WiFi). Period.

You are rolling the dice, several of them, in fact, and will probably end up with a worse experience than if you just bought a MyTouch Slide. I hate Android phones myself, but if you buy a phone from a carrier for a carrier, you're guaranteed working web, at least.

Some, like myself, are not willing to pay out the wazoo for AT&T. When I did a comparison of prices, I would be paying $30/month more than I am now with TMO.
As for me, I do want that phone, though now I'm hearing more about the 9780 (which coud be a good sign that it's about to drop). That is another reason I don't jump & get the first thing I like. But even after weighing the options, if I were to still get the 9800 and unlock it, it would still be worth losing a few things. I have never had 3G, so it would not be a loss since I've never had it.

Duane.. I have UMA running just fine on an unlocked 9800 branded AT&T.
No 3G - that you got right, but Wifi AND UMA working perfectly.
It took about 30 minutes to get everything right. No tooth pulling involved.

It will work on canadians network though! same rogers/telus/bell and their sub company (chatr/virgin/koodo) all share the sames 3g waves as at&t.

note that telus/bell/virgin/koodo does NOT have edge connections since they were cdma company who decides to add an hspa+ network

As soon as I read yesterday about UMA for the Torch, I went to AT&T, got it, unlocked it, generically upgraded to 5.0.0.246, did the UMA provisioning, and all is working peachy. Of course, no 3G, but, UMA works nicer than my T-Mobile 9700 UMA! Probably has to do with the included 802.11n capability on the 9800. As I am international a lot, having UMA on a device is an important issue for me, and, I will have 3G whenever I'm out of the country (on 2100). And, since I still seem to have unlimited international data on T-Mo, all the better.

As I also had bought an iPhone 4 (on AT&T), for all the fun and media stuff, that is really what I need 3G for, I don't anticipate EDGE to be significantly slower for emails and messaging stuff on the 9800, which is what I'll use it mostly for. And also, when I think about it, Im probably in a wifi zone 40% of the time anyway, so, I'll have fast speeds, if I need.

So you are able to use Facebook, GoogleMaps, MMS all on the T-Mobile USA network?

Well, i don't MMS, but, absolutely everything else works fine, also the 2 other things you mention are fine. Do people still really MMS? I haven't done that since 2005 probably. With 5mp cameras now, i don't see why someone would MMS a crappy resolution picture, when they can email a far nicer one.

My elderly parents is the reason why I still MMS.

I am glad that I stayed subscribed to this thread. I think I am going to give the Torch another try. I'll be picking one up tonight!

ATT and Tmobile are on different 3G bands. The 9800 will work on EDGE on Tmobile, and you will not get UMA (voice over WiFi) calling using it on Tmobile.[/QUOTE]


Follow below and you could have UMA calling:

You must setup your BIS service with Tmobile and select support phone with OS6, i.e. Tmobile Bold.

Tmobile offically not support Torch 9800 and you will not get Windows Live IM and AIM IM because service book is not available.

I managed to get them working by restore the service book from my old Tmobile 8320, then to load the original service book from Tmoble Bold to use on my unlocked, unbranded Torch 9800.

After the above task, I also get T-Zone originally for the 8320.
Totally, my Torch consisting of 46 service book including 12 for my email accounts.

Wow. Snaker190 - you are wrong. Read the last few threads. AT&T and T-Mobile use different bands. You CANNOT get an AT&T 9800 to use T-Mobile's 3G bands. No matter what plan you have.
