Hey Guys...

1st let me say that I'm more than pleased with the 8330. I moved from a PocketPC XV6700 to the 8330 last week and wish I would have moved long before.

Could anyone point me in the direction of some good software for the 8330?

Can I create my own ringtones and, if so, what file format does it require (mp3, wav)?

I'm currently using the BB Dimension L Theme. I've just learned how to hide some icons so they don't show up on the Home Screen, but I can't seem to figure out how to choose which icons will show on the Home Screen. Do you have to create your own theme?

Mobile17.com is a good site to use for ringtones. You select your phone and carrier and use your own MP3 files (from your computer) to create ringtones and they will send them to your phone via MMS or e-mail, whichever you prefer.

As for other software, if you text and e-mail a lot I have found that BB Alerts and PeekaWho are very useful apps. BB Alerts uses the built in LED light to remind you when you have new messages waiting, and allows for different colors for each type of message (e-mail, SMS, MMS, pin, voicemail). You can also use tone reminders. Peekawho is an application that brings a pop-up to your screen when you receive a new e-mail or SMS that tells you that you have a new message, and if the number (or e-mail address) is in your contact list it will display their name and picture (if you have one assigned to the contact).

If you are looking to browse applications, handango.com provides a long list of both free and pay-for apps, and they have a free application that installs directly to your phone to allow you to browse the apps they offer straight from your BB.

When it comes to themes... I'm not really familiar with the basic themes, but with the ones I use (downloaded), when you click the apps button, the first ones on the list are the ones that will appear on the home screen. Select an application and click the menu button to select 'move' to move the applications around.

My recommendation would be to get a little 1 gig or 2 gig card for the device > throw your favorite mp3's on it and you can:
1) listen to them wherever you are
2) set them as ring tones

I just picked up an 8GB PNY card for my Curve for like $30 at Circuit City after the rebate. Ensures I can store tons of music and videos at a pretty cheap price!

Someone mentioned the differences of SMS and MMS messages. While I was aware of those differences, I still have yet to find a detailed list of what exactly PIN messages are for. Are they only messages for sending between BlackBerry phones? And at the risk of sounding totally stupid: Does PIN stand for Personal Identification Number? Thanks!

P.S. I have found myself ALWAYS using MMS messaging these days. I don't know of anyone who still has a phone that can not receive them. As you can see from my posts here I tend to be a little verbose from time to time. LOL and I hate when I hit that 160 character limit SMS imposes. Plus, sometimes you just want to add a picture or whatever at the last minute and I hate then having to copy/paste the SMS contents into a new MMS message. Just seems quicker to get in the habit of using MMS in my mind.

I think in the L theme the top row of apps and the first 4 of the nest row are your L apps. The last one on the right is profiles, which I believe is default.

Recommended Apps:
Windows Live Search wls.live.com (from BB Browser) I can't go a day without it.
Datavault by Ascendo comes in handy.

I also recommend Yahoo Plus for mail and PIM manager. Syncs perfectly using DM, and in my opinion is better than Gmail for email.

Welcome to the forums I love the google maps, I use it all day long instead of cracking open the yellow pages or searching on my computer. This is by far my favorite application out of all the others I have.

I have an 8Gig card and have no problems, but then again I upgraded to the 4.5. so not sure if it matters.

I just got finished with the 4.5 upgrade.

Took 40 minutes total. It backed everything up and restored it perfectly.

Hey I have the 8330 as well through Verizon. The Curve is made to use up to an 8gb card.
I have one in mine; I like it because it is so multifunctional. I used it recently to transfer a ton of info from one lap top to the other.
I personally just put mp3's onto my memory card and then use those as ring tones.
You can personalize ring tones, through your address book, per person. And or have a main ring tone from your music.
As far as software, I have used a few different sites.
Have you signed up at verizonwireless.com for my verizon? You can find supported stuff there as well as managing your account.
I have also gone to blackberry.com and from there you go to the owners lounge and register.
Hope some of this helps. I have had tons of fun personalizing my BB.

I like Viigo, it downloads articles (from places you specify) that's good for when you're waiting in the airport or even on a flight because the content is already collected so you don't have to be online to view it.

Also the bb sync app from RIM (for computer) makes it easy to xfer music/playlists from iTunes. It can get irritating, though, because of DRM >:(

Also check out Vlingo, some people hate it but I just think it's misunderstood and it learns to perform better!

Some things I use are not technically apps but they come in handy - a lot of WAP sites have a bb friendly link you install on your home screen for fast easy access (ESPN, CNN, BBF, Crackberry... oops!)

Here's another question.

When I receive a Text or Email (While the phone is in the Holster), when I remove the phone from the holster, it automatically opens the email or text message.

Is there a way to disable this?

I don't think you can, I've never seen the option. It's supposed to be a feature; why don't you like it?

Just wait a few seconds before you pull the phone out of the holster and it won't automatically open. This is a feature not a bug as they say. If you pull the phone out immediately, they assume that you WANT to view the message.
