Default Stuck On GSM W/No Manual Network Option

Please Login to Remove!

I'm in Buenos Aires for a month. My 8700c had a strong EDGE signal last week. I left town for the sticks and when I came back my berry locked to a GSM frequency. I have no manual option in the "network" on my 8700. I know that there's at least two other servers that offer GPRS/ EDGE. I've soft booted it. Taken the battery and sim out. Still GSM. It's driving me nuts and if I can't figure out a solution, I'll have another month with no data capabilities.
Been doing searches with no luck. Appreciate any help.
Thanks.
Dan

You should have the manual net select when you are roaming internationally. I know Cingular locks it out domestically, but when I had my 7290 and went to Costa Rica, manual net select became available. I would suggest picking up a local prepaid phone or something and calling Cingular CS.

Weird. They were quite helpful when I was having trouble in CR.

Default Your words of advice got me to call again.

I was told that my "Gemplus" sim card did not allow manual network select no matter where I was. My only option was to have another sim activated, leave it in a cing phone in the states for 24 hours and then FedEx'd to me in Argentina. Three days with no phone, etc. Hopefully this is a helpful solution. But I would recommend anyone with Cingular and a gemplus sim to switch it out.
Thanks dc

There was a known issue with some of the Gemplus sims. That is a bummer though

Very interesting!!

I had a 64k national SIM last July when I was in CR, and I never looked to see if it was a Gemplus branded card...

Default Back in Business

Had a new SIM FedEx'd to me. It gave me the maunal net option. Was back on EDGE in a couple of seconds. So I can say without question, it was that gemplus sim.
Thanks again.
