Default Activating Blackberry from BES

Please Login to Remove!

We've got several BB users who are not very tech savvy. They've learned to use the basic functions of the BB like email, address book and phone. However occassionally there are a few that wipe the handheld while in the field by using the wrong password. So the question is, is there a way that we can activate that BB from the office using the BES rather than having the them bring it to the office and doing an enterprise activation?

We're running the latest BES v.5.0 and we're working with BB Curve 8350i.

TIA

Yes you can. You can do an enterprise activation OTA. You simply assign the user an Enterprise Activation password. They then go to Options, Advanced Options, Enterprise Activation. Input their email address and the Enterprise Activation Password and it should be activated OTA.

Thanks for the quick reply!

That's the way we've been doing it and it works well. However I was curious if there was a way that I could just activate the BB from the BES with no end-user input needed. Or to send an activation email to that BB PIN or something along those lines.

I think end user input will be required. Don't think there is any other way round it. With regards to sending the activation email by PIN, you can always create an activation password and send it by PIN to the device.

I THINK PIN will work even if Enterprise Activation has not been done - but I may be wrong here. Also, I am not sure if you can send the pin from your BAS or whether you would need to use a BB to send that PIN...

This is not possible. Enterprise Activation (whether wired or wireless) requires user interaction.

Enterprise Activation without user interaction would be a security issue in my opinion. As a BES admin, you could activate any device (if you know the PIN), even outside your organization.

Ok, thanks for the advice. I guess well just start working more with the end user and try to walk them through the activation....which shouldn't be too difficult for some.

Thanks again!

FWIW I tend to use single character activation passwords, and also use the left hand side of a sure type key, Q, A, Z, for example. Everything to lessen the risk of user error at this point.

The activations i do tend to be with the end user on the other end of the phone with their BB in front of them.
