Question Reflash 8830 from Alltel to Verizon - yet another question

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys, got a question.

I had a Verizon 8830 that I was able to reflash to the Alltel firmware several months ago by deleting the vendors.xml file on my PC.

Now that Alltel is officially Verizon where I live I have a new BB 8830 World Edition to test with that is Alltel branded. I want to flash it to verizon. I've downloaded the latest verizon firmware from their website, installed it, deleted the vendor.xml but the DesktopManager does not see the firmware. I have done all this:

Uninstalled all BB software
Reinstalled BB 4.7, disabled ALL Update Now features (didn't install it!)
Deleted the vendors.xml file
plugged in, launched apploader.exe, and still no dice.

Any ideas to what is different now? Or any work-arounds?

Thanks in advance!

I think you're confused a bit.

Loading a Alltel OS doesn't "flash" or device for Alltel. You can load a Telus, Bell, Sprint, Verizon, any CDMA carrier's OS to your 8830 and use it. It won't "flash" it to that carrier.

All OSes are created by RIM and sent to the carriers, the carriers then test it and release it as they see fit. Removing the vendor.xml file just bypasses the OS looking at the vendor ID on your device.

Ok, then what I meant by re-flash was to remove the Alltel branded OS and get the Verizon Branded OS loaded on the 8830 hardware.

What I need to know is how come removing the vendor.xml file have no effect this time? There are threads all over the 'net about how just removing the vendor.xml is all that is needed, and it did work once, just can't figure out why it didn't work this time.

any tips or tricks would be helpful.

The OS's aren't branded.
Are you saying that Desktop Manager does not find an OS for you to load?

When I turn on the phone it says Alltel, I am trying to load the OS 4.5 from Verizon onto a 8830 that is from Alltel. So when it boots up, it says "Verizon" instead of Alltel.

I did this once before with a Verizon 8830, I bought it on ebay. Downloaded the Alltel branded ROM from RIM, and installed it, deleted the vendor.xml file. Then when I plugged in the phone it saw the OS, and updated the phone. When it was all done, it no longer said Alltel, at boot up, it said "verizon"

that is exactly what i am trying to do but with alltel hardware to verizon software.

I am trying to figure out why it won't work anymore. Or of the Verizon 4.5 that I got via the RIM redirect to Verizon is more 'secured'...

Ah...yeh, you cant do that.
The startup image is NOT OS related.
Changing the Os will NOT change the startup image.

Ah interesting. Damn, how the hell did I do it on that old one. I wish I hadn't sold it on ebay now!

So since the OS I got Verizon seems completely the same as my Alltel OS, I don't see the point in re-loading OS's?

Nope, no point.

Correct.

As Midnightdraven stated, the splash screen will not change with the OS you install. If the OS you currently have works, then there's no need for you to upgrade.

Here is my selfish reasoning for this ordeal. I've read that Verizon now allows the device GPS to be used with google maps with 4.5 of their OS. So that is why, but I wasn't seeing the verizon branding so i haven't tried it yet. Is the GPS disabled in the OS or the Firmware level? If its in the OS level then I guess it should work now?

It should work now.

I believe they've opened it to BlackBerry maps. Not too sure about Google Maps.

Tested it and it is very, very accurate with Blackberry Maps. Google maps acts the same. Will re-try that one when indoors.

Thanks, this is what I wanted to happen.
